I have 5 of the most beautiful adopted Chihuahuas in the whole world. I don't want to lose them.

I'm so sick/. I've got to pull it together for the call with my boss @ 3pm but I don't think I can.

The silver lining here is that they say that everything happens for a reason, and I have found, in my life, that this is very, very true. It's hard to see it now, of course, when you're in the middle of it, but eventually, you will land squarely on your feet. :) Best of luck to you! :hi:

16. If you are having trouble paying for food/care for your pups
call local rescues and SPCAs, ask if they can help you with any food or meds. Often, rescues get lots of food donated to them, they would rather help you with food/meds than have to take your dogs in and rehome them.

Good luck - hope you find a job soon!!!

25. Firings, layoffs, downsizing, rightsizing, closings, outsourcing, offshoring
My wife and I have lost jobs for all of those reasons, some more than once.

It happens, you've got to be strong and like Madonna (not that I am a big fan) said long ago, "if life knocks you down, you have to just keep getting back up".

Good Luck!!

29. Many, many condolences. It truly is a gut-wrenching experience.
Wishing you good luck into turning this set-back into an opportunity.

Regarding the 3pm call, I'd suggest you let them to most of the talking. ("Them," because there will probably be an HR person sitting in.)

Write down a few questions in advance, so you have a sort of script in hand during the call. For example, perhaps you need info on health insurance, severance, a written letter of reference, etc.

But feel free to keep your answers to their questions, your responses to their statements, brief.

This call is not about mending a relationship, it's about you making sure that your interests are properly and fairly served.

If not, then file for unemployment compensation @ 3:15PM, after you've had it out with your boss. And then take stock of your financial situation to see if it's worth applying for any form of public aid, such as heating assistance.

Good luck to you!

95. I hope this isn't too late, but be sure to ask for a copy of your personnel file. I always ask for
that, so I have a copy of all my reviews and any notes or notices that were placed in my file. It's not a common request and sometimes you have to push a bit, but usually the line, "It's my file, I demand a copy of it," will do.

That, and file for unemployment as soon as you get off the phone (if you're eligible) in order to start the waiting week as soon as possible.

You're in my thoughts -- I've dealt with being laid off, a firing, an ugly resignation that tried to turn into a firing. It hurts a lot and you need to be good to yourself for awhile.

They fuck everything up and what pisses me off is watching working class, middle class idiots vote these fuckers into office when things are finally good again.

I'm really sorry about your job loss.

This is why I was screaming here last year that Obama should have focused on jobs, not healthcare because it takes TIME to turn this shit around. I'm still pissed about the lost year and I don't care who it upsets here. He fucked up.

46. I wished I lived closer so I could be of better help.
The bad news is that unemployment is as 10%. The good news is that unemployment is at 10%. What I mean is, this is no black mark on you or your record. You tell everyone that you lost your job because of the recession, period. You tell yourself that, too! Don't go beating up on yourself thinking if "I'd done this or not done that..." It's not true.

Now - some more advice from someone who's been there....
Set yourself up with a firm schedule for exercise, job hunting, chatting on DU and having fun. Stick to it.
Work the phones, check all the job sites, get your applications out, then know that you've done everything you can do for the day and take your dogs out for a walk.

Otherwise you're apt to slip into some bad habits ( I know I did. ) The internet can eat your entire day if you're not careful.

Find someplace to be with other people. So much of our lives are tied to the workplace that it's very easy to become isolated.

Lots of churches now have places where unemployed people can meet to swap pointers or just give each other support. I'm sure there are other places that offer the same kind of community. There is even a forum here on DU - the Career Help and Advisory Group. ( I never knew they were there until after I was working again.)

Take it one day at a time and keep in touch with your friends here and in real life.

though. I think I like the whole set a schedule thing. Get up @ 6am take the dogs out for a long walk. In @ 7 shower and breakfast, hit the nets for a few hours to job search and interviews in the afternoon. Walk the pups and then relax.

I neglected my fat ass working so dayum hard. Time to reclaim my health bitches!!!!!

112. Now you're talking!
Happened to me 4 years ago....first thing I did after the 1pm talk was have a stiff drink or 2 and realize there wasn't anything I could do about it for the next few hours. Next, I set up the routine, got my mental/physical health back and look & feel better than I had in years....still working for me too :). Cussed the suckers out loud a few times & imagined them infront of me when I didt it.

Took me 6 months to find another job, but I survived "with a little help from my friends" and then my cat & I moved, went thru some more trauma, but we did it! Now you say? 76. Excellent suggestions here.
I'd also echo that keeping as close to a regular schedule as possible is good for job hunting and keeping your head out of depression if you're prone to it. It really is easy to slip into bad habits, especially if you get your hopes built up about 2nd interviews and things don't turn out right (that happened with us multiple times, we've still not had a final offer on anything).

Believe it or not, you may enjoy taking your laptop to Panera or Starbucks and setting up office there one day a week. Everytime we go there are people during the day who are trying to hunt jobs and network. I've met some very fine people in the same situation that way.

Knock down old doors...join Facebook and re-connect with old college and high school friends. Let it be knows that you're looking for employment (don't be shy, everybody is doing it!). Join Linkedin.com, too.

It wasn't easy, but we did it. I hope you're as lucky as we were. Our crisis began when my DH got injured at work, then the diabetes he's had for 50 years (since age 4) began to take over. He developed vascular dementia, and now he's in a nursing home for rehab, hopefully temporarily.

My thoughts and good wishes are with you and your Chihuahuas.

It seems the majority of folks that are employed right now are on the brink of unemployment. Everyone is scared of what tomorrow will bring. It is definitely a downer topic, but always try to keep in mind the bright side of the picture. New opportunities are going to come your way and bring with them new experiences.

I cannot locate the posting on DU, but someone brought to light this website, http://www.unionofunemployed.com/, and an article that goes over the creation of the site, http://www.alternet.org/economy/145797/the_unemployed_now_have_their_own_union,_and_it's_catching_on_quickly.

I found it an interesting concept and have it bookmarked for the future...

I don't think you will lose your dogs. As long as you can feed them and house them they are yours. It is hard to go through something like this, especially in these times, but you have what it takes to do it. Your post says so, though not in so many words. Despite how you are feeling you are concerned with your pets first and how to get through that call without letting your boss know how upset you are. That is classy, and very brave.

Keep posting about it. It will help, and maybe you can get some hearts ease knowing that even strangers to you, like me care very much what happens to you. I do so wish I could do more to help. I think we all do. Take care and I'll be thinking of you.

Do your best to keep a positive attitude. Explore a variety of options. And the very hardest part....don't take it personally. It probably had nothing to do with your abilities. Just bad circumstance/luck of the draw.

Xultar, please let me know what brand of dog food your precious
dogs eat. I get multiple copies of the coupons that are in the

I usually get 25 of each coupon.

Last week, I got 30 $3 off any Purina One coupons (Dog or Cat food)
and I also got Mighty Dog Coupons (but one get one free).

Many weeks, there are coupons for free dog food or treats.

I can help you save a lot of money on dog food.

Please let me know and I would be happy to mail you any coupons that might help.

These are such tough times for so many people. Please let us know how it went. I hope that you can file for unemployment benefits right away. Take one day at a time, otherwise you'll feel overwhelmed.

Like some have suggested, maintain a daily schedule. Some people even get dressed as if they are going to work and spend several hours job searching and networking. Trying to find work is a job itself.

People often say how unfriendly it is in GD, but it is also a group of people who do look out for each other.

I hope you can file for unemployment and also check into food stamps. The rules are now very liberal about food stamps - as Obama declared that every County in the USA is in an emergency situation with regards to jobs.

Some places even give people cash General Assistance and there is also County medical.

I've been unemployed for a year.

some advice: if you have a mortgage, and its high, sell your house immediately, don't wait. find the cheapest apartment you can. This saves you money, prevents foreclosure and credit disaster, and makes you more flexible if get a job offer that makes you need to move.
If you have friends, hang out with them a lot. That really helps.
If you don't have friends, make some new ones.
and, the thing I wrestled with the most, don't blame yourself. its the economy.

134. I had a friend who had a "good" (but grinding) job. He was fired on trumped up charges
regarding his performance.

It was the best thing that ever happened to him--he had a MUCH BETTER job before he could draw unemployment check one. The point is, it's the end of one chapter, and the beginning of another!

Sincerely wish you and your family (of pooches!) the best.

138. I got it two weeks ago
Absolutely no warning other than vague hits of mass layoffs which I was sort of assured didn't affect me.

Was in the middle of an email when I was told to go to a meeting that I wasn't scheduled for. Two people there demanded my cellphone, access cards and keys and gave me papers to sign, walked me to my desk to get my stuff and out the door. Had enough time to shout to a colleague "CHANGE THE ROOT PASSWORDS, I'M OUT OF HERE".

139. Hope all went well....{{{{HUGS}}}}
My husband, TrogL, and I are dealing with the ramifications of his being laid off 2 weeks ago. The very first thing we did was set up an appointment with our financial advisor, regarding the mortgage and other issues that needed to be dealt with. We were able to work things out, what a great bank :D. Also we got the paperwork lined up for EI (Employment Insurance in Canada) and got the resume updated for both of us.

Also we have tried to keep a schedule to what he had before (difficult due to his being a night owl :)). He has stayed in contact on the various tech forums he belongs to and we have both been networking like never before. We both have been involved in the community for a number of years and so we have spoken with the friends that we have made. Everytime we see them now they ask how we are doing and if there is anything we need.

We have been lucky and our 4 cats are doing okay. The hardest thing will be not getting depressed, which is something both of us struggle with as we are both Bipolar. Keep your chin up and you will get through this.

Take Care and sending you positive thoughts :grouphug:

141. Do you live near Lexington Ky? Saturday RJ Corman
is having a job fair. They are giving applications to the first 500 people in line. It's railroad work. It's hard work, but should pay well. You need to be able to lift at least 50lbs, and don't mind hard outdoor work. I worked the yards in Louisville Ky. It is filty, dirty, and bone crushing, but pays well.

You need to be unemployed to qualify.

http://www.whnt.com/news/sns-bc-ky--railroadjobs,0,5833889.story

The first 500 unemployed people who show up at a job fair this weekend in Lexington will be given applications for possible railroad construction work, making $25 to $35 an hour.

At a job fair from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. EST Saturday at R.J. Corman Railroad Group's Lexington Yard, the company will be looking for people to fill various temporary positions.

The Lexington Herald-Leader reports the jobs include railroad laborer, railroad equipment operators, a CDL truck driver and bridge painter. Some training will be provided. Workers will make improvements to short line railroads that the Nicholasville-based company owns in Kentucky, Tennessee and West Virginia.

The jobs are part of a $17.5 million federal grant awarded last month to the company.

Applicants should bring their driver's license and Social Security card. People applying must be able to lift at least 50 pounds.

They will hire 100. You need construction experience. These are temp, but could become permanent.

RJ Corman
133 Buchanan st
Lexington Ky.

Get there early!!!!
