The $6,000 dog




It's still the best technology around for checking out unattended packages and chasing down criminals. And it comes with a hefty price tag.

What is this tried-and-true kryptonite for crime, you ask? The few, the proud...the elite and rigorously-trained German shepherds, of course. According to the New York Times, New York's Metropolitan Transportation Authority pays approximately $6,000 for each member of its bomb-sniffing and perp-busting pack of pooches.

The transportation authority police, who patrol the region's buses and rails, have 45 dogs on duty, while the New York Police Department has 86 and the Port Authority police have a respectable 46.

I'm sure no one can disagree with me when I say the GSD is the best dog in the world, period.

(Having been a very proud owner of two that are much missed now, I'll a little biased.)

a friend of mine who's blind told me her guide dog is worth 80 grand! (she did not have to shell that out; donations cover most of it)

I've done some work with people who train guide dogs, they are amazing.
