Will Grant Surrender $50 Bill To Reagan?
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=124286440

March 3, 2010
A U.S. congressman from North Carolina wants the $50 bill redrawn to feature the face of former President Ronald Reagan.

Republican Rep. Patrick McHenry wants Congress to tell the U.S. Treasury to replace former President Ulysses S. Grant on the bill. McHenry announced his bill Tuesday. He has 13 Republican co-sponsors.

Grant was a Union general during the Civil War who led the North to victory and later became the nation's 18th president.

McHenry said Reagan transformed the nation's political and economic thinking and argued that "every generation needs its own heroes."

3. Al Franken once said Reagan should be on all the money...
Edited on Wed Mar-03-10 05:58 PM by Auggie
since his administration ran up great deficits.

Franken said children could then refer to Reagan as "The Money President."

I thought that was great.

I'd cross him out with a big X, every 50 dollar bill I had. That would be fun. Because of Reagan I don't have that many.

47. Grant was a better President than Reagan
Grant's war of attrition is what won the Civil War. Other Union Generals didn't attack when they had the South on the ropes. Grant and Sherman was the two Generals that was responsible for breaking the South's will to fight and winning the war.

60. You know, Captain, we Southerners don't think about the Civil War
nearly as much as you think we think about the Civil War.

I've lived in the South nearly all my life and I never have conversations about the Civil War with any neighbor, casual acquaintance or co-worker. Believe it or not, we Southerners talk about the same thing y'all Yanks do: movies, the economy, jobs, health care, pollution, the weather, etc. The only time the Civil War comes up is if someone - usually a "not Southerner" - brings it up to see our reaction - which is usually not much of one.

52. Yeah but Grant did it on orders to preserve the Union....
Regan did it on behalf of the richest people against the middle, working class, and poor for the benefit of the powerful. I am not a fan of Grant, but I think about it this way. If Grant had not done what he had done, where would this country be. If he had not been there to lead the Union, where would the United States be. If Reagan would not have been born, become governor of California, or President, where would the US be today?

Grant's importance to the nation wins hands down. He should remain on the $50. They can put Reagan's face on "high yield bonds" or credit default swaps.

He told us all we were going to be part of the "investor" class. Then he busted the unions, shipped the jobs to China and raised taxes on the workers, while giving HUGE breaks to his crony corporations.

Now, we are all minimum wage servants to the Banksters.

his and poppy's presidential papers have been gone through with fine toothed combs, and things are made public..

they were due to be released in January 2001...and we all know what happened then..

After being tucked away in TEXAS :wtf: for 9 long years, I'm sure a LOT has gone "missing", or has been "sanitized", but there should still be plenty of interesting things we have never found out about ..

Presidents should be dead for at least 20 years before ANYTHING gets named after them (assassinations being the possible exceptions)..and the bulk of their papers should be released NO LATER than 5 years after they leave office..

57. Threadjack: Why do people STILL act like a $50 is some big deal?
Edited on Thu Mar-04-10 12:06 PM by gmoney
An ATM I sometimes go to will kick out four $50 bills instead of ten $20, which is fine by me (less to put in my Costanza-like wallet). But lots of places still make a fuss when I try to pay with a $50. A gas station I go to, even though it costs $35 or so to fill the tank, makes a big production out of taking my $50 bill.

I guess one reason there's nothing bigger than a $100 in general circulation is supposedly to make large untraceable cash transactions more difficult, and to stimulate sales of aluminum briefcases to drug lords.

Just seems odd to me somehow. /Threadjack
