DU reminds me of Python's "4 yorkshiremen" sometimes
Basically, whatever salary is posted for a position, or whenever there is a middle class job described, there consists of a predictable pattern of "Oh, I'd LOVE to be able to live off of (insert dollar value here)" Now we have attacks on whole professions because they DON'T earn 5-8 dollars an hour.

Instead of attacking the few genuinely middle class jobs, union or otherwise, left out there we should be trying to make more of them. So the rest of us can participate.

For those who don't know the reference:

The Players:
Michael Palin - First Yorkshireman;
Graham Chapman - Second Yorkshireman;
Terry Jones - Third Yorkshireman;
Eric Idle - Fourth Yorkshireman;
The Scene:
Four well-dressed men are sitting together at a vacation resort.
'Farewell to Thee' is played in the background on Hawaiian guitar.
FIRST YORKSHIREMAN:
Aye, very passable, that, very passable bit of risotto.
SECOND YORKSHIREMAN:
Nothing like a good glass of Château de Chasselas, eh, Josiah?
THIRD YORKSHIREMAN:
You're right there, Obadiah.
FOURTH YORKSHIREMAN:
Who'd have thought thirty year ago we'd all be sittin' here drinking Château de Chasselas, eh?
FIRST YORKSHIREMAN:
In them days we was glad to have the price of a cup o' tea.
SECOND YORKSHIREMAN:
A cup o' cold tea.
FOURTH YORKSHIREMAN:
Without milk or sugar.
THIRD YORKSHIREMAN:
Or tea.
FIRST YORKSHIREMAN:
In a cracked cup, an' all.
FOURTH YORKSHIREMAN:
Oh, we never had a cup. We used to have to drink out of a rolled up newspaper.
SECOND YORKSHIREMAN:
The best we could manage was to suck on a piece of damp cloth.

1. One of my favorite Python skits ever.
Now I'm off to eat a lump of dry poison and dream of living in a corridor!

3. This was really not a Python skit, but a skit on "At Last! The 1948 Show"
Cleese and Chapman were on this show prior to MP, and Tim Taylor Brooke wrote the sketch...it was never on the MP series, but they did it at their live shows.

4. Yeah, there's nothing particularly uplifting about earning minimum wage
Mostly, it's boring because you can't do anything for entertainment but drink a 40 ouncer of Colt 45 a week, if that. Then there are the periods of sheer terror when you're sick and you wonder if this is the one that will kill you. Then there are the months of enduring a toothache so bad you can't think about anything else, knowing you could do something about it if you got paid just a couple of dollars an hour more.

Poverty wages suck and people living on them tend to get pretty brutalized after being deprived of both decency and hope for long periods of time. Rage tends to take over and we all know where that leads.

Bashing people for earning a decent wage leads nowhere. Pretending there's something noble about privation leads nowhere. If you want to bash somebody, bash the looters, not the workers who manage to get enough to live on.

13. We're almost always an extremely tolerant group...
...until someone with a wealthy, or upper middle class, or sometimes even MIDDLE middle class background comes up in a personal anecdote or a news story.

Then there's always one DUer shouting that said person is an privileged asshole and deserves no sympathy, no matter what the situation. Well do I remember the thread about the Winter Olympic athletes who didn't "deserve" their medals...
