It's the hypocrisy.
Anti-Gay Calif. Politician Cited for DUI--After Leaving Gay Bar

An anti-gay California state senator was placed under arrest for drunk driving after leaving a gay bar. A male passenger was in the vehicle along with the lawmaker was not arrested, reported Sacramento CBS affiliate Channel 13.

State Sen. Roy Ashburn was pulled over by the California Highway Patrol at about 2:00 a.m. on March 3 when his state-issued vehicle was observed being driven erratically. The driver, identified as Ashburn, was taken in and charged for driving under the influence. Channel 13 reported that unidentified sources said the senator had been at Faces, a popular gay nightspot, prior to his arrest.

In a March 4 article, the online news site Talking Points Memo characterized Ashburn, who is married and has four children, as "a fierce opponent of gay rights" who had led anti-marriage equality rallies.

Ashburn issued a contrite apology, stating, "I am deeply sorry for my actions and offer no excuse for my poor judgment. I accept complete responsibility for my conduct and am prepared to accept the consequences for what I did."

1. I'm sorry-- it's easy to justify bigotry but dammit, it's still bigotry....
I'm really sick of people using sexual orientation for "gotcha politics." Yes, I understand that politicians are often hypocritical. Does that surprise you? Unless that hypocrisy was unexpected, whether someone is gay or not is immaterial. Whether they want to hide their sexual orientation or not is none of my business, frankly. If they do, I hope they can learn to live with themselves better, but otherwise, leave it alone.

Using gayness to bash republicans ultimately reveals bigotry on the part of the bashers, IMO.

2. Is that what you got from the post?
I sure didn't get that impression. It was about hypocrisy through and through and in no way bashed gays..IMO.

3. I'm sure the politician in question has also spoken out against drunk driving...
...or about highway safety. So why is his VISIT TO A GAY BAR the height of hypocrisy? The accusation is only thrown around in the context of his possibly being GAY.

That is bigotry, plain and simple. IMO.

4. I guess he could have been campaigning.
But the only thing plain and simple here is that Ashburn is deeply conflicted, and not the bigot voters thought they were electing. Aren't Californian voters entitled to question his commitment to their fear and hate?

I'd like to hear just how opposed to human rights he really is, after The Other is revealed to be not quite so Other, after all. I'd like to know just what it is he thinks he's apologizing for, if it's not just the DUI.
