San Francisco police commission votes not to arm cops with Tasers
(03-04) 12:31 PST San Francisco, CA (AP) --

San Francisco's police commission has rejected a proposal to draft a policy for the use of Tasers by officers.

Wednesday night's 4-3 vote was the second time in two weeks that the commission rejected the plan. The panel also voted down the idea in 2004.

San Francisco is one of the few major U.S. cities that does not arm its officers with Tasers, and Police Chief George Gascon has been pushing to reverse that policy.

Gascon said the stun guns would reduce the number of police injuries, save some suspects' lives and save the city money in litigation.

3. Good!
I hated the idea of having to face SF officers with tasers. Tasers, IMO, are far too easy for a cop to pull and reduced the need for them to use their brains and wits to control/diffuse a situation.

5. I'd rather a taser pointing at me than a gun.

7. The point is --
having a taser onboard makes it easier to over respond -- when it's a gun, they are always thinking much more before pulling it. My brother-in-law was SFPD and pulling a gun was his very LAST choice in ANY situation. Tasers make it too easy - and tasers can kill.
