Toyota Accelerator Problems - A Question
Is there something about the way they make Toyota transmissions that doesn't allow the driver to shift the car into neutral if it's speeding out of control?

1. You can shift into neutral...
sometimes it makes no difference. Even shifting into reverse has not stopped it in some instances.

2. I friend of mine claims that it is
Edited on Thu Mar-04-10 09:40 PM by UP_4012
NOT possible to shift her Camry while it is moving. You CAN shift into L but not into N while the vehicle is in D and in motion. Weird ass system I guess.
If it it one thing that sends me into countless rants it is the integration of computers that take away driver control in the name of convenience. This whole "drive by wire" bullshit is just about as dangerous as it comes.

5. Yeah, I read that, and then
was only left with more questions. Why the hell would you design a device to capture data for just a few seconds, install it in every model for the past 9 years, and then claim it is useless? The devices have SOME sort of purpose, but unlike domestic and Nissan "black boxes" the Toyota AND Honda units are locked down. I am not one to spout theories, but they are obviously hiding something.

10. You do realize most new planes are 'fly by wire'
If its safe enough for planes, then that is good enough for me. Granted planes have a redundant systems.

There is certanly a problem at Toyota and it needs to and will be fixed, but sometimes people on this forum act like other car makers have never had a recall ever. All cars have recalls. If I was in the market for a car right now, and Toyota got me a good enough deal, I would buy one, and I would drive it until they got around to fixing it.

9. If you shut off the engine you lose control over it and the steering
making it more, not less, likely that you'll be in big trouble. Funny, there was no big clamor when the very same thing happened to my '62 Pontiac Le Mans. Fortunately I was on a wide, empty suburban street. I shifted into neutral and stood on the brakes. Brought it to the dealer, he made an adjustment, never had THAT problem again (but did have many others) including a timing belt that snapped every 3,000 miles. That's why I drive a (2000) Toyota Sienna now.

7. That brings up another question,
which should have occurred to me at once. Except, I haven't driven an automatic transmission for more than a decade.

Are the accelerator problems only with automatic transmissions? I have a hard time seeing how a manual transmission would not be able to stop the vehicle.

And my '04 Tacoma doesn't have an acceleration problem, or a transmission problem, or, up to this point, any problems at all.
