Atheists offer college students porn for bibles
SAN ANTONIO, Tex. (NBC) -- A college atheist group is offering students pornography in exchange for their Bibles and other holy texts. The porn-for-holy texts swap was held on the campus of the University of Texas San Antonio on Wednesday.

Carlos Morales told us, "It's smut for smut. It's what they call smut for what is actually smut, which is their religious text," said atheist Carlos Morales.

The provocative claims are meant to draw a lot of discussion.

I think they were making a point about the worth of the bible.

14. I never said otherwise
One assumes that this is their way of sharing what they've determined its worth to be.

Given the outrageously dysfunctional and downright harmful take the Bible and Christianity have on sexuality, I think it's kind of appropriate that they chose to offer porn in exchange.

IMHO of course.

37. The Bible's worse than Playboy for smut/word ratio.
Sure, you get a little frisky business now and then in the OT, but the NT is just one big buzz-kill.

Well, unless you're into D/S and humiliation, of course. In that case, Paul's your man!

15. In practical terms, it's a bad idea because any college student with the slightest bit of
intelligence already knows the places on the Internet to access and download all the free pr0n he/she wants.

It's not that difficult to fill up a 500 GB hard drive every month with pr0n.

19. Smut for Smut
I know, I was there. The atheists were protesting religion. The christians were protesting back. The agnostics were sitting in down in protest asking for peace. It lasted for three days and there was a debate between the christians and the atheists, but they kept it civil.

22. It's a publicity stunt....
Edited on Thu Mar-04-10 11:57 PM by Happy Hippy
Another example of IRL trolling from our young people. Look! Look at me!!! Look how edgy I am!!!!

This stunt is the intellectual equivalent of a fart. Just what the world needs, more degradation to women. While I realize that porn is copious and freely available, I don't think it would hurt to get their point across in some other manner that doesn't exploit women. This "drive" doesn't make the college atheists appear very intelligent.

on edit: It's interesting that they say the Bible and "other holy texts", but in the interview the young atheist only harps on Christians. If the article read "Porn for Korans, and other holy texts" and the interview was slamming the Koran - how would you react?

I didn't comment on degradation of women in the Bible. When did two wrongs ever make a right anyway?

My exact words were, "Just what the world needs, more degradation to women. While I realize that porn is copious and freely available, I don't think it would hurt to get their point across in some other manner that doesn't exploit women.

This is a silly stunt that makes them look like imbeciles.

27. NO GUYS! WRONG IDEA.....
I get the staement, but an EVEN BETTER STATEMENT: exchange them for banned or challenged books. Just pick from the Canon. It'd be so much cooler to turn college students on to stuff like vonnegaut (assuming they've never heard of him).

Keep the porn and exchange them for HARRY POTTER books instead.

32. Are you refering to Kurt Vonnegut?
During my college days we were required to take several courses in the humanities. As an engineer, one of the courses I selected was "Engineering History" - we read Vonnegut's Player Piano as one of our assignments.

I'm going to get a bit O/T, but I promise to bring it back on track.

I always chuckle at the concept of "banned books", in the United States as that is obvious hyperbole. Yes, books have been banned from public libraries* and schools but not from the United States as a whole in recent history. The is usually the fault of overzealous parents, teachers, school boards, or school administrators. Yes, I am aware of previous attempts by US Postal Inspections and Customs to seize books during the early 20th century.

*SCOTUS ruled in Island Trees School District v. Pico that " local school boards may not remove books from school library shelves simply because they dislike the ideas contained in those books and seek by their removal to "prescribe what shall be orthodox in politics, nationalism, religion, or other matters of opinion.

Long story short, there is no reason that a college student can't get their lazy behind to Amazon or their local bookstore and purchase any book they so choose - including Slaughterhouse-Five or The Turner Diaries.
