9/11 Trial Reversal: Obama Advisers Set To Recommend Military Tribunals
WASHINGTON — In a potential reversal, White House advisers are close to recommending that President Barack Obama opt for military tribunals for self-professed Sept. 11 mastermind Khalid Sheik Mohammed and four of his alleged henchman, senior officials said.

The review of where and how to hold a Sept. 11 trial is not over, so no recommendation is yet before the president and Obama has not made a determination of his own, officials said. The review is not likely to be finished this week.

Officials spoke Thursday on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to discuss private deliberations.

3. If that were true, we'd not be reducing troops in Iraq and would have already attacked Iran.
I hate stupid shit like this.

5. Didn't you get the memo? They're already backtracking and will not meet the next troop
withdrawal deadline for Iraq. Vice Premier Biden says that we're going to make sure that there are always COMBAT TROOPS there not mere Cooks and Janitors.

The U.S. military has prepared contingency plans to delay the planned withdrawal of all combat forces in Iraq, citing the prospects for political instability and increased violence as Iraqis hold national elections next month.

OK by the show of hands, who among us saw this coming? :silly: :(

7. Since NYC doesn't want the trials there anymore
and I would imagine that there's nowhere else in the country clamoring to have them, this becomes the only option left.

10. I think many people in nyc still want the trials here.
I work a stone's throw from the SDNY courthouse and know a lot of people to want to bring KSM & Co. to justice here. I don't believe the NY Rags that are pushing the RW memes. If Obama backtracks on this it will be his biggest mistake since appointing Tim and Arne.

14. It's not going to happen in NYC
it's just a question of where else. There is no compelling reason to have it in one city or another, just a matter of which city is "unlucky" enough to get it, if it were in a civilian court.

Yes, I said unlucky. It would be a traffic and security nightmare that no city would forget by 2012. And you'll never hold it in a major city in a red state. D. C. might be the only place it could happen, if not in a military tribunal.

17. thats bs...
why would it be a traffic nightmare? those on trial would be WALKED underground from the holding facility to the federal courthouse. those are RW talking points. I know I was part of the security team that brought in mad0ff to that courthouse. We drove him in but that wouldnt be the case for KSM & co. we need to stop being so afraid.

13. All I know is that Bloomberg used to want them in NYC
and he's decided the city cannot bear the hassle and expense. Apparently the President and his advisors have given up on that idea.

It would be a burden for any place that doesn't have the security of a military base.

When will the review be completed?

The leaks could be a way of forcing Obama's hand by those who support a reversal.

Could be a means to measure support of reversal versus opposition.

Could be preparation for getting people used to the idea...keep saying might do it, might do it, might do it & (some) people adjust their thinking, then do it...a tactic to soften the blow, so to speak.

Just pondering...

15. What reversal? Rahm was always for tribunals, Holder was for trials.
This article doesnt say that Obama has changed his mind, just that his advisers (that are not Eric Holder) are recommending tribunals

16. If the President of the USA has no confidence in our legal system, how am I supposed to?
I guess the USA is just no longer able to function. This is the last straw for me.
