A local teevee news helicopter caught this yesterday afternoon. I watched it live during the regular newscast. During the arrest portion of the livecast, there was some stuff shown that I knew was gonna be edited out.

I was right.

Here's the story and video:

MYFOX DETROIT STAFF REPORT

DETROIT - A traffic stop turns into a wild police chase that ends in a violent crash on Detroit's west side, and it's caught on camera. The suspect tried to make a getaway even after the crash, but he didn't get far. Police quickly took him down.

Click on the second video in the player to see the end of the chase.

26-year-old Andre Hardy of Detroit has been charged with felony fleeing and eluding and resisting arrest. He has six warrants and wasn't supposed to be driving because his license is suspended.

SkyFOX spotted a white Ford Bronco on the Lodge Thursday evening trying to elude police during rush hour.

The high speed pursuit involved Detroit and Michigan State Police. The vehicle was seen bobbing, jumping and weaving on and off the freeway, smacking into several cars before crashing into a pickup truck at Linwood near the Lodge.

A suspect fled of foot and ditched his coat. Police, who were close behind, believe he may have been trying to dump drugs or possibly a pistol. He was taken into custody a short time later.

Detroit Police Chief Warren Evans is checking to make sure that officers did things by the book when the suspect was apprehended.

4. Watching the ass-beating may feel good, but the city's gonna take an unnecessary financial hit
I found this on another board:

Posted by Kraig

Over a short period of time, the Detroit police amassed over $300 million dollars in lawsuits from actions like the one yesterday. Which is equal to the City's deficit. It's not about doing the job brutally. It's about doing the job right. The whole point to training law enforcement is to avoid doing things that the average person on the street would do in a high adrenaline situation.

The majority of the police officers on the force wuld have apprehended the suspect without balling up a fist and punching him in the face while he was down on the ground. Beating the hell out of the guy doesn't change any of the things he did. It simply provides the "asshole" that just slammed his Ford Bronco into a family the chance to make a buck off of the arresting officer.

Sit in on a Police Commission meeting or a City Council meeting on Tuesday when the lawsuit settlements are being approved. You'll see situations like the one yesterday, with the exception being that there's another person walking through the alley, getting passed up by the Perp, being mistaken for the Perp and having the dog shit beat out of him as if he were the Perp. Boom, lawsuit. It happens constantly in Detroit.
