Court urged to hear cases of alleged cop torture

Lawyers, community activists and religious leaders today urged the Illinois Appellate Court to hear cases from some 20 prisoners who allege they were victims of torture by Chicago police.

The group, calling themselves "Persons Concerned about the Integrity of the Illinois Criminal Justice System," filed a friend-of-the-court brief in an appeal by Stanley Wrice, who contends he was one tortured into confessing to murder. He is serving a life sentence in prison since the early 1980s. snip

The brief contends the torture took place under the command of former Chicago Police Commander Jon Burge, who is awaiting trial on federal perjury charges for denying knowledge of the torture decades ago..

2. Police torture should be AGGRESSIVELY pursued
Not only is it obviously illegal, but it often leads to FALSE EVIDENCE which can seriously mislead criminal investigations. Thereby letting the REAL criminals go free.

And anyone who utters the words "witch hunt" in this case should be shouted down. Either you have a transparent police force or you don't. Your constitutional rights are at stake here.

4. Anyone in law enforcement that claims torture is not used to elicit false confessions:
1) Are totally out of the loop either because of their assignment or other reasons
2) Don't want to know because they don't want trouble or other reasons
3) Know but won't bring charges against those guilty
4) Are involved and don't give a damn whether they are guilty as long as they get a confession

There may be some police departments that don't reach this level. But it would depend on the level of corruption and other crime in the community and the type of police department supervisors.
