Tiger Woods versus Ben Roethlisberger
Infidelity (a matter between a man and his wife) versus sexual assault and harassment. True he could be innocent of both charges since lots of women see opportunities for riches with sportsmen, but that didn't stop them going after Kobi for example. Some guys have all the luck. Not one word has been heard on cable about either charge.

<snip>
A jovial night of bar-hopping in a central Georgia college town ended in a new allegation against Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger after a 20-year-old college student told police he sexually assaulted her in a nightclub.

The two-time Super Bowl winner already faces a lawsuit from a woman who claims he raped her in 2008 at a Lake Tahoe hotel and casino, an allegation he strongly denies.

The latest accusation came early Friday in downtown Milledgeville, about 85 miles southeast of Atlanta and about 30 miles south of the lake home the player owns.

His previous accuser was working as a VIP hostess at Harrah's Lake Tahoe in July 2008 when she alleges Roethlisberger lured her to his room under false pretenses and forced himself on her. He was in town playing in a celebrity golf tournament.

1. Look at the thread sink even here
You couldn't say the word "Woods" here during the height of the coverage without garnering 30 replies an hour.

Big white dude is accused of two RAPES, essentially, and nada.

Unbelievable.

3. Sexual assault is not rape
First off---what a stupid fucking OP.

Woods did nothing illegal... and Woods is probably the most popular athlete in the world.

Ben is an NFL QB and while popular to NFL fans.... isn't much known by folks who don't watch football.

Again---dumb fucking OP.

6. Well, the Woods story had elements of comedy - that is, if you get your jollies
from other people's pain the whole thing was pretty funny. There was also the spectacle of the fall from grace. Add in Gloria Allred, a porn-star, an overhyped press conference, and a jilted wife with a golf club and it was probably worth 2-3% of the posts it got.

With BR, there isn't any of the comedic element, and I doubt he's known to nearly as many people...

12. Yes yes, it's because he's white...
God, some people need to stop seeing the world as "black and white", no pun intended.

Ben is not nearly as well known as Woods, and neither of these charges have been proven yet, unlike how it was with Woods when he admitted to it, so it won't get as much coverage, here or anywhere else.

So no, DU is not racist for not commenting on this a ton. What's unbelievable is your constant ignorant race-baiting.

2. Screwed Up Priorities
It's something that rape...and this comes with the caveat that one is innocent until proven guilty...gets less play in the corporate media than infidelity. It's even more the case when the infidelity is among personalities that can create hours of babble on the tabloid and cable shows yet an alleged rape will go quietly unless it gets extremely gruesome or violent.

I'm not sure it's racist in this case as, sad to say, Mr. Roethlisberger is not the first NFL player to get into trouble (Plexico Burris and Michael Vick are just the tip of the iceburg) and many of the "smaller" cases only get local attention, if that much. The local press tends to want to look the other way cause it's a sports figure and the power of these figure and the teams they play on can be overwhelming. Thus this story will get shoved off the pages unless there's some very incriminating revelation.

In the meantime, we've gone from the condemnation of Tiger to his redemption...he went to "sex rehab" ya know.

:hi:

14. If you are convinced of his guilt, could you at least learn how to spell his name
Personally, when I engage in omniscience, I try to spell names correctly.

8. Girl was 20 and in a nightclub huh?
Edited on Mon Mar-08-10 04:17 PM by SimonPhoenix
I'm immediately skeptical of most celeb athlete rape cases. I never believed the Kobe charges. I thought they were motivated by racism, just like the Duke lacrosse charges. Why would Kobe Bryant commit rape? He has hundreds of girls throwing themselves at him at every place the team stops to play. He's going to risk his career and life to get some satisfaction without consent? Difficult to believe. Same goes for Roethlisberger.

And I don't forget the Hofstra fake-gang rape case either. That ho should be in jail for making up the charges.

13. Man, I heard about the Roethlisberger incident
starting late last week. It was all over CBSSportsline, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, and ESPN. I'm surprised you hadn't heard about it, frankly.
