Best place to send money to Chile?
No red Cross or Salvation Army, please. We sent to the telethon for Haiti, but Chile looks like it's not gonna have one

1. Chile just had a very successful Telethon

It ran for 24 hours yesterday and ended tonight. The author Isabel Allende flew from California to be one of one of the first to donate. She gave a HALF MILLION DOLLARS.

In answer to your question, I would suggest contacting the Chilean Consulate in San Francisco or Los Angeles.

The Chilean ambassador in Washington couple of days ago announced that he would ask the consulates around the United States to coordinate aid from Chileans who live in the United States.

The donations will go straight to Chilean aid agencies, bypassing Red Cross, Salvation Army and other NGOs that would siphon some of the money.

Hope this helps and as Chileans would say in appreciation, "tienes el corazon bien puesto."
("Your heart is in the right place."

2. The Isabel Allende Foundation is another (and maybe better) option
It is in Sausalito. Sure someone there can point you in the right direction. The Foundation section the right side will tell you how to make contact and to donate.

Isabel Allende, the bestselling author, is a niece of the late President Salvador Allende, not to be confused with Isabel Allende, the daughter of Salvador Allende and now a Socialist Party senator in the Chilean national Congress.

5. go to the grocery store and buy some chilean produce.
that way, you can help both chile, and american workers.

as far as the earthquake is concerned- even though the chilean earthquake was 500 times more powerful than the one that hit haiti, chile is in no way in as dire straits as haiti.
chile has one of the strongest, if not THE strongest economy in latin america, and the news reports i've seen have predicted that their economy will rebound very quickly.
