Tom Delay: People Are Unemployed Because They Want To Be

First Posted: 03- 7-10 10:55 AM | Updated: 03- 7-10 11:06 AM

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/03/07/tom-delay-jim-bunning-was_n_489050.html

Former House Majority Leader Tom Delay called Sen. Jim Bunning (R-Ky.) "brave" on Sunday for launching a one-man filibuster of unemployment benefits, arguing that they dissuaded people from going out and finding work.

Appearing on CNN's "State of the Union," the Texas Republican said that Bunning's fiscal responsibility was commendable, even if his shenanigans (refusing to allow unemployment benefits to be considered by unanimous consent) nearly brought the Senate to a halt.

"Nothing would have happened if the Democrats had just paid for ," Delay said. "People would have gotten their unemployment compensation. I think Bunning was brave in standing up there and taking it on by himself."

Asked whether it was bad strategy to make a budget stand on a $10 billion extension of unemployment (as opposed to, say, the Bush's $720 billion prescription drug package), Delay insisted that if the PR had been done right, Bunning would have been applauded. Helping the unemployed with federal assistance, he said, was unsound policy.

"You know," Delay said, "there is an argument to be made that these extensions, the unemployment benefits keeps people from going and finding jobs. In fact there are some studies that have been done that show people stay on unemployment compensation and they don't look for a job until two or three weeks before they know the benefits are going to run out.

Host Candy Crowley: Congressman, that's a hard sell, isn't it?

Delay: it's the truth.

Crowley: People are unemployed because they want to be?

Delay: well, it is the truth. and people in the real world know it. And they have friends and they know it. Sure, we ought to be helping people that are unemployed find a job, but we also have budget considerations that are incredibly important, especially now that Obama is spending monies that we don't have.

i.e. "People are sick or injured because they want to be."

22. They do, people are ill because of the foods they ate, people weren't careful enough
in work or play, people smoked cigarettes and also people choose to not buy health insurance. Work place exposers and related illnesses and disease are choices of work one does, they choose the jobs they have so they know all of the hazards that the job has. See it is all about personal responsibility while not holding those employee's or insurance companies responsible for anything they force people to do. Get a job that causes joint or back injury? You knew doing that kind of work causes those injuries so it's your fault.

I have heard these same nit wits tell a person that was disabled from an auto accident at the age of 5 that he caused his own cripledness, the guy had ran out into the street while his father was beating him with a belt, according to the nit wits the 5 year old should have known better then run into the street without looking and besides the 5 year old should have taken the beating like a man. The father was innocent of anything that the child had happen to him, after all he was just being a good parent and the driver of the car wasn't at fault either, though he was driving at 45 mph in a residential area which state law states has a speed limit of 25 mph. Nope it was all the lack of responsibility of the 5 year old.

I've heard people argue that subsidized healthcare is wrong because, "Why should I pay for someone else's unhealthy lifestyle".

There are many many people who believe you only get sick if you have done something wrong, or if you have a "bad attitude".

And as far as backing up your asshole opinion with actual facts, no one calls him on it.

"Those that assert, must first prove."

Delay needs to bring forth any studies vetted by reliable, independent organizations that can show factual eveidence to support his untenable position that people "want to be unemployed".

Other than that, die screaming in a fire you piece of shit criminal pissant.

34. It amazes me that these fucksticks don't get that.
I would much rather be back at my old job than being subjected to jumping through hoops to get unemployment at a fraction of what I was making, having to look for a job, interviewing, worrying about paying my bills, seeing my hard-earned life savings disappear, and watching my health deteriorate from all the stress this is causing. I am sure it has already take 10 years off my life. Not to mention all the humiliation when everyone I know sees that I STILL don't have a job. Fuck Hot Tub Tommy and the horse he rode in on. It amazes me that somebody hasn't "gone postal" on him and these other assholes yet.

23. What a piece of shit.
I would say that maybe 1 out of every 1,000,000 people is like that, maybe. And start looking for a job a few weeks before compensation runs out? Please I have been looking for a job for about six months and it is hard. The jobs I can do I am overqualified for, the careers I would like to enter into I don't have enough experience. There are a lot of us out there that are too overqualified for entry level jobs but don't have enough experience to get a mid-level job so we just have to wait and hope something happens. It sucks.

27. if unemployment stays above 9% for nearly 2 more years
which probably isn't out of the question, should we continue to extend unemployment benefits beyond what we've done so far, which is up to 99 weeks? You could have people collecting benefits for nearly 4 years, never mind if there is a double dip recession.

43. What is the alternative? If there are no jobs, or until that situation improves
it would be disastrous if everyone collecting unemployment were not given aid. I've been unemployed since June of last year and I'll tell you what..there are ZERO jobs around here

I do understand what you're saying, just had to get that out of my system

53. I guess the alternative is to do what we do...
when the unemployment rate was 5-6% and when people's benefit period ran out that was it. If unemployment is structurally above 8% during the medium term, then the conversation of either ending these extensions or laddering the benefit down has to begin soon. We already are offering the world's longest unemployment benefits at 99 weeks.

33. Fuck you, Delay!
I'm watching my life crumble -- you know the one I built up after paying for college on my own to get a degree (the first in my family!), working hard -- many years multiple jobs, paying taxes for decades and I can't find a fucking job and it sure isn't from a lack of trying.

In a tight job market, I am OLD, too experienced and expendable. I froze all winter, grow a garden and can produce, shop at thrift stores so I can fight to keep my house, hardly drive my car, etc. and it's all because I want to live like this?!?!?

Fuck you! No, I want a job. I want to have some money to cover the basics and maybe have a splurge or two. I want to have health insurance after having my COBRA run out.

Tell me what the fuck I did wrong? Did to deserve this? I pursued the American Dream and had achieved some measure of stability and then you and your fuckhead corporatist colleagues off-shored the U.S. economy, pulled the rug out from under us and left us stranded.

THEN, you have the fucking unmitigated audacity to actually fucking blame US -- the middle class victims of your decades of greed and corruption.

FUCK YOU a million times over

48. Freedom of speech and all that...
WHY does the media even give total jerks like this a platform? Yeah yeah, rhetorical question, we all know the basic drive of most in the media is ratings. Ratings = controversy. Controversy in this case is a dense moron who is really quite removed from the *real* world he claims to know.

Are there people who remain unemployed because they want to be unemployed? Of course. Even in the most prosperous ecomony there are people who make that choice. In THIS ecomony is that even close to the overall truth??? Delay, you are a dolt to even go there.

24/7 is a lot of time to fill with blathering.

As long as we pay attention to blathering idiots, they will blather their collective butts off.

So, taking my own advice, I will quit blathering about wretches like Tom Delay!
