Another suicide
Edited on Sun Mar-07-10 06:19 PM by Liberal_in_LA
seems to be a lot of suicides recently

Mark Linkous, aka Sparklehorse, takes his own life, his family says
March 7, 2010 | 1:40 pm

North Carolina-based singer-songwriter Mark Linkous, who recorded under the name Sparklehorse, has committed suicide, his family said. Known most recently as part of the Danger Mouse and David Lynch collaboration "Dark Night of the Soul," which will finally see an official album release this year, Linkous specialized in a somewhat dreamy, fractured take on blues and folk heard through the prism of his own unique style of songcraft.

The news of his passing was confirmed via an online statement attributed to his family. "It is with great sadness that we share the news that our dear friend and family member, Mark Linkous, took his own life today," read the statement posted on the official Sparklehorse website. "We are thankful for his time with us and will hold him forever in our hearts."

4. Don't try to hijack this thread and make it about The Gun issue..
..it's about the loss of a talented soul.. and serious, unchecked depression was the cause..

8. The MODE of death is by gun..
The actual cause? Untreated, serious depression.

If you can't acknowledge that, I can't help you.

22. right, because the numerous countries with limited access to guns couldn't possibly have much higher
suicide rates.

oh wait.

plenty of them DO

it's not the guns

for pete's sake. in WA, i can walk down to a pharmacy and buy over the counter insulin and over the counter syringes. immensely effective suicide method

those who really want to always find a way

23. You can walk into your Ace Hardware and buy a very comfortable rope.
But the pull of a trigger can be so impulsive and so effective.

When you hear of a suicide, DO ask about the means.

26. except that in countries w.o access to guns
there are plenty of suicides. many of them have MORe than us.

for example, japan.

interestingly, japanese americans also have a high rate of suicide and they often use guns

in japan, they almost never use guns.

why?

they aren't available

both groups have high suicide rates

it's a culture thang, not a gun thang

hth

3. Sad. Recently, prominent suicides seem contageous. It is really upsetting and my heart goes
out to those who knew him.

He is right at that age that this recent study said is the most depressing time for most people--mid forties.

Rest in peace. And I love David Lynch and am so sorry that he has lost a collaborator.

5. What about all the ordinary people that commit suicide daily
Edited on Sun Mar-07-10 06:29 PM by HipChick
that we never hear about?

There was a colleague of mine at work, who I noticed got extremely uncomfortable around the subject of guns - finally one day he blurted out that his younger brother had taken his own life with a gun - depression was something that was looked down in his culture and not dealt with as an illness, more 'a oh pull yourself together approach' like to admit depression was a character flaw or weakness in his culture, and it was more hidden and not addressed in his culture. I will never forget that pain on his face, or him saying to this day, his family never speak of his younger brother - due to the shame he brought to the family. This is so sad...cultural stigma against depression/mental illness...where does that person turn?

11. To cope with that kind of loss AND to feel ashamed over it..
We lost my husband's father the same way..

It'sone of the great unaddressed tragedies of our culture.. emotional illness, particularly depression, and in the worst case scenarios, suicide, needs to be brought out of the shadows and into the light of reason and compassion..

it would be kind of like government assistance for the hopelessly inept.

and might get the attention-seekers whose hearts aren't really in it, to think twice.

30. As history trudges through the decades and glances at
the lives and deaths of humans, there seems to be a very high incidence of early deaths and suicides of the deeply creative and brilliant minds.

I am not negating all of the other suicides that occur, I am specifically referring to artists of one type or another

As it has been so it shall be...we will continue to lose these creative minds.....I am never surprised anymore by these unfortunate losses....the world can be an amazing place but it is also a cruel and viscious place and sometimes it is too cruel for many of our fellow humans.

May he RIP!
