2. Have to agree. He does top-drawer roles and does them awfully well.
Among several favorites, I thought his "Duane" in THE LAST PICTURE SHOW and TEXASVILLE, films based on Larry McMurtry's near-perfect fiction, leads the pack.

12. A strong case could be made for all of those. Hi, WCGreen.
I loved the way he played the DJ in THE FISHER KING when Robin Williams asks him on the stairwell if he knows who he is, and Bridges tells him,

"I'm drawin' a blank."

The timing and the tone just kill me. He's a fine actor and I'm so pleased he won tonight. I thought Colin Firth was outstanding also in A SINGLE MAN.

21. That one came and went here in Cleveland...
That is the curse of getting the New York Times here in the Hinterlands...

You are damned to know of good films but not see them.

But then that makes a good cable package really really really important...

24. Well, even if you had to watch good films on cable it sounds to me
like you watch them with every ounce of respect they deserve, just as the East Village aficionados do.

It always seems so ridiculous when Joe Lieberman or other politicians try to demonize those evil movie people out in Hollywood when if they'd just look around U.S. citizens are buying tickets to those films and standing in long lines to see them because they love the idea of seeing a film and the one they're in line to see won't be the last one, either.

55. To you. To me, it was a mawkish, sloppy movieish mess with Coppola at his Spielbergian worst
It also looked like it was shot through a Brach's Butterscotch Drop.

Much as the story was important, I thought it was a complete botching. Coppola directed the Godfather Part 2, one of the greatest movies ever made, but he certainly has dropped a couple of stinkers along the way.

You're not alone, though; many lefties just LOVE that picture. I'm probably harder on it than I should because I value the story and history so much that seeing it thrown away with a ham-fisted, overblown cymbalism (sic) is like watching Spielberg or Stone at their worst.

No offense meant; I just REALLY disagree...

The Academy recognized some very talented people this evening. It seemed like they rolled them some *Hollywood* out there tonight as well. I'm also pleased to see them giving well deserved nods to indie folks and pics within tech & screenplay categories that played more like the art of filmmaking and less like popcorn sales - that was cool

I had to really track it down, though I'm pleased to see it is available now more widely.

Helped jump-start this sensitive sociopath's wavelet of crime.

73. Jeff is one of America's finest actors of all time
And he and his family are excellent people. I was very stoked that he won at long last. Best Actor indeed.

78. what about Heaven's Gate?
I haven't seen it, but its badness is legendary.

Not Bridges' fault of course, and I agree that, on the whole, he's had a great career.

82. Heaven's Gate is a masterpiece!! Just make sure you see the full print and not the hacked up one...
Not only is it a very important indictment of the corruption of the West but it also has the best ROLLER SKATING scene ever filmed.

The reason Heaven's Gate failed are many but at the base of it the movie depicts a real life even where the president of the USA and many of the powerful families of Wyoming had a hand in killing US citizens WHOLESALE simply because they were a poor and ethnic.

Almost all the families and companies who did the killing are still running the state of Wyoming today.

86. I wouldn't go THAT far, but it's REALLY good...
Cimino's an odd duck, and he threw away his career on that picture. It was full-on artistic suicide.

Somehow he's loved to death for a gorgeous-looking piece of absolute crap like "The Deer Hunter", but a fine movie like this was never given a chance. That's the way it goes when the media rumblings about being out of control and over budget take control.

Having said all that, though, it's a bit full of itself as a movie with overblown imagery for the sheer artistic bravado of it and a sweeping bombast that is hard to not wrench the viewer from the moment. Even so, it's a great story, the pacing and grandeur of it are quite fitting and compelling, and the performances are fabulous. It's beautifully shot and well edited and it really doesn't deserve the crap it's gotten. Compare it side to side with something treacly like "The English Patient", and one can see the unfairness that can come into play.

Read "Final Cut" if you haven't; it's one of the best books ever written about the film business.

If it's any comfort, serious film lovers have stuck by and come around about this picture, and it will not be totally swept under the carpet of history.

80. I agree with that.
He has always been one of my favorite actors. For some reason, he just seems like "one of us."

83. Tron was a bad movie.
Yeah, I know. A nostalgic, childhood favorite for some.

But a bad movie.

84. "Cutter's Way" was his best movie
A.k.a. "Cutter & Bone", featuring a character that is the original template for "The Dude".

The film also contains a prescient, ominous 1980 Dick Cheney doppelganger.

It's a noir thriller set in late-1970s Southern California. Very political.
