High-End Hemp Speakers Are All the Buzz


John Harrison looks like an unmade bed, talks more than Larry King and says he sees sound as color. He makes speakers out of hemp, and to spend any time with him leaves you thinking he’s smoking some of the product.

It would be easy to dismiss him as a lovable, eccentric old hippie. But the man might just be a mad genius. He has rethought the most fundamental part of a speaker -– the cone –- and traded paper for hemp. The result is the Tone Tubby, and it makes guitar amps sing like Aretha Franklin. You’ll find them in rigs used by everyone from Billy Gibbons and Carlos Santana to Keith Richards and the guys in Metallica.

“That is one fine, fine piece of product,” Gibbons told the guitar gurus at ToneQuest Report. “They look great, but most importantly, they sound great. They are really stunning, and they’ll stand tall with anything.”

High praise indeed. But you don’t have to be an ax-slinger to appreciate what a little hemp can do for your sound. Harrison’s outfit has higher ambitions.

High times at the Oscars!

Woody Harrelson stepped out on the red carpet in a Burberry custom-tailored black tuxedo made out of ... hemp.

Ryan Seacrest made the announcement on his E! pre-show while interviewing Best Actress nominee Gabourey Sidibe, who didn't seem surprised by the news.

The 48-year-old Harrelson - who has long advocated for reforming marijuana laws - is up for Best Supporting Actor for The Messenger.

On Friday, he won the supporting-actor prize at the Spirit Awards.

so I can wear my made from hemp shorts. If you haven't worn any hemp cloth made clothes you have no idea what comfort is, IMO

very interesting indeed. Harrissons web site is www.hemphop.com if any are interested in more infomation. I was surprised he had speakers for all applications, guitar, home audio, car & marine.

5. I first learned about these when I was checking out

Los Lonely Boys, and the bass player was using Tone Tubby speakers, which I had never heard of before. Sounds interesting, although a little out of my price range now.
