Oscar's memoriam omits Farrah Fawcett and Bee Arthur
HOLLYWOOD, Calif. -- Every year, Hollywood honors the memories of stars who have recently passed during the Academy Awards' annual "In Memoriam" montage - but a couple were conspicuously missing during Sunday's broadcast.

Farrah Fawcett, who -- although best known for her TV work in shows like "Charlie's Angels" - also starred in such films in "Dr. T and the Women," "Cannonball Run" and "The Apostle" and was nominated for a Golden Globe for her performance in 1986's "Extremities," was absent from the montage.

"No Farrah in the memorial," film critic Roger Ebert Tweeted during the broadcast. "They have a lot of 'splaining to do."

Emmy Award winner Bea Arthur, also best known for her television work but a veteran of the big screen as well, was also not included in the montage.

Academy reps did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Farrah's absence.

Earlier this week, The Associated Press reported that the segment simply had too many people to include for the time allotted.

"It gets close to agonizing by the end," Bruce Davis, executive director of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, told the AP. "You are dropping people who the public knows. It's just not comfortable."

Still, Farrah and Bea were primarily TV stars, a possible explanation for their absence from a segment devoted to film stars and creators.

Oddly Michael Jackson made the memoriam, even though to my knowledge, he has never had a role of any significance in a Hollywood movie.

1. Not enough time for a 10 second flash on the screen?
That's shameful.

12. It's not like they come close to finishing on time anyway
Every year the 3 hour broadcast goes for at least 3 1/2 hours if not longer. If they were so concerned about time they sure fail that goal almost every year.

Diana Ross played Dorothy. :-)

7. I liked him in "The Wiz"
he made up for the blunder of casting Diana Ross in a role for a young girl.

5. I understand people being upset that Farrah and Bea were not included, but...
It wasn't Michael Jackson's fault. Clearly Farrah Fawcett and Bea Arthur should have been included, but Michael Jackson deserved to be there also. Michael Jackson being mentioned is not the reason Farrah and Bea should have been included. CRAZY!!!

17. Agree. He may not have been a huge movie star but he didn't deserve LESS attention than
Farrah Fawcett or Bea Arthur.

If they had included both of them but not included Michael Jackson everyone would still be mad that HE wasn't included with the exact opposite arguments ("Farrah was only in a couple of movies..." blah blah blah)

Besides "This Is It" which is the biggest live music film of all time, Michael Jackson's groundbreaking work in short films (music videos?) seems enough of a reason for him to be included.

8. The Wiz.
Regardless, they should have MADE the time for Farrah, Bea and all the others who made a significant contribution to the industry and a lasting impact on the fans.

It's not as if they'll get another chance to compete in the category again next year.

10. They included a lot more producers and even critics this year
A lot of people I don't think the vast majority of the public even knew or heard of.

9. Excluding Farrah is really nuts
Edited on Mon Mar-08-10 11:15 AM by Kurt_and_Hunter
She was on TV for ONE SEASON. (She quit Charlie's Angels after one season to develop a movie career.)

She has been in six movies I can name without looking it up.

And she was married to two name actors and was a big name even when she wasn't working much.

I know people in Hollywood hate Ryan O'Neil, but that much?

14. Was I mistaken, or did they also flash a picture with Meryl Streep in the photo?
There were two people in the photo, Streep with someone else. He was probably a director but the photo flashed so quickly that all you saw was Streep.

15. Excluding both of these women was grossly unfair
I admire both of them and watched them for years and grew up with them on TV and in films. They deserved a mention in memoriam as much as anyone.

20. her performance in logan's run was probably the reason for dropping her.
great movie, but gawd she was dreadful in that.

"oh yeah! i remember!"

she did develop some actual acting talent later on, but none was evident in logan's run.

kidding aside, she certainly should have been included. it's rather self-indulgent to include some of the more "inside baseball" people at the expense of the visible, public ones.
