Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.): "Premature" to allow gays in military. "Exhaustive study" needed.
Senator Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) told CNSNews.com that it is “premature to make any decision” on repealing the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” (DADT) policy and the federal law that prohibits homosexuals from serving openly in the military.

At the U.S. Capitol, CNSNews.com asked Nelson, “Do you support repealing the policy (DADT) and the actual law that prohibits homosexual activity in the military?”

Senator Nelson said, “I want to see what the military is putting together. Both Secretary Gates and Admiral Mullin, chairman of the Joint Chiefs, said they want to engage an exhaustive study to find out what the impact, a very careful analysis of what the impact, would be on our military.”

“We have two wars going on, so it’s a question of what impact would it have on readiness, retention, and recruitment,” he said, “and until we have that report to look at it, it’s premature to make any decision in my opinion about what to apply to the ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ rule that we have in place today.”

and say we need to start over at the beginning.

5. That man is so full of shit he must have to wear earplugs
to keep from soiling his suit.

Studies have been done. Other countries have fully integrated militaries that reflect the makeup of their countries, gays and lesbians included, and have no problems at all.

It seems like the only problems are weak heterosexual males who are terrified some gay is going to treat them the way they treat women.

6. Premature" to allow balck and white mixed units in military.
Exhaustive study needed.

Same fight, different group, and sadly different decade.

What is 'mazing is that the most committed (with few exceptions) against these polices, never, EVAH served.

Why at least McCain has a tad more weight for me, but not much more. At least he had his ass in uniform at one time.

7. Baloney. They're going to allow gays so they can bring back the draft
The whole point is to do away with any possible loopholes so people can't easily dodge the draft.

10. THat is why conservadems and "conservatives"
are fighting it so hard.

This is like saying they are going to expand the draft, that's why they let blacks and whites serve together...

Personally by the way if they do... GOOD. If we are an Empire, time for all Imperial citizens to do their part. And I mean that by the way.

9. Maybe it's going to take a mass outing by all . . . and I mean all . . .
of currently serving members of the armed forces. The number might be so shockingly large that dismissing them would cripple the military. This whole thing is so stupid . . . it's not like "the gay" are not in the military.

13. Exhaustive? Issue the damn order and let the personnel deal with it.
They'll deal with it fine. They always do. They will make it work. They always have.

A: It's the Military. Orders are to obeyed. Period.

B: Our military is a fully professional operation, every one of them. They're all adults with no time for the petty sexual neuroses of teenagers.

C: Well, realistically, a few MAY have problems with it. But unit cohesiveness and morale are excellent, and mutual support is one of the strengths of our military's focus on personnel. Any officer worth his/her pay grade has dealt with far more difficult subjects -- like loss, exhaustion, injury, death, PTSD, tragedy on a grand scale. As for the enlisted, they deal with stuff no matter what their grade may be. So accommodating a few gay/lesbian comrades-in-arms should be no trouble whatsoever.

I have faith in our military -- no, not uncritical worship, but the confidence that they're worth our support and trust. It's time for the CinC to issue the order and turn his attention to concluding our affairs in Iraq and AfPak.

15. There's no "order" to issue, we need to pass a law.
Don't Ask Don't Tell is statute law. That means it can only be undone by an act of Congress.

Is this what a Democrat looks like in Nebraska?

Sooner or later he'll have to take a stand, one way or the other. GOP or Democrat?
