If you did, you'd understand WHY he opposes it.

And it is NOT because he's a closet republican.

23. Yes, I did, rather enthusiastically back in '04.
And while my 2004 self and I have our disagreements, I'm confident that he would have been as bothered by this stance of Kucinich's as I am.

You're right: it's not because he's a closet Republican. It's because he's an egotistical purist who thinks his own vain grandstanding ought to trump what needs to be done for the sake of the Democratic Party and the American people.

It has nothing to do with 'purity' - it has everything to do with a BAD IDEA. A bad bill.

127. The leadership got us a bill.
It is not a perfect bill. But it is good enough, and about as best as is possible under the circumstances. Their obligations have been met.

Now it's time for Kucinich to meet his, and vote for it, as any good Democrat, and anyone interested in the good of the American people, should.

It is not logical to imply that voting the exact way as Republicans will always be bad.
Life is not pitch black and pure white.

71. Kucinich has one of the worse voting records
Out of the 242 listed Dems in congress 110, only 17 WORSE than Kucinich, 7 percent of all democrats have a worse record

http://projects.washingtonpost.com/congress/110/house/party-voters/
for Congress 111

30 out of 261 are worse than Kucinich
only 11 percent of all democrats have a worse record

http://projects.washingtonpost.com/congress/111/house/party-voters/

People claiming he is a great democrat

Well that is the bullshit.

Edited on Mon Mar-08-10 08:02 PM by Bjorn Against
I don't determine who has the best voting record based purely on how often they vote with the party, in my opinion Kucinich has one of the best voting records because he is not afraid to stand for his principles even when it is unpopular to do so (although there are some votes I disagree with him on.)

I prefer principles to party loyalty.

That would make his record a positive one.

http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5iJ1cJ9n9sI1uAPv_Fa64wjCy2gggD9EAORAG0

TAWAS CITY, Mich. — Prospects are good for resolving a dispute over abortion that has led some House Democrats to threaten to withhold support of President Barack Obama's health care overhaul, a key Michigan Democrat said Monday.
Rep. Bart Stupak said he expects to resume talks with House leaders this week in a quest for wording that would impose no new limits on abortion rights but also would not allow use of federal money for the procedure.
"I'm more optimistic than I was a week ago," Stupak said in an interview between meetings with constituents in his northern Michigan district. He was hosting a town hall meeting Monday night at a local high school.
"The president says he doesn't want to expand or restrict current law (on abortion). Neither do I," Stupak said. "That's never been our position. So is there some language that we can agree on that hits both points — we don't restrict, we don't expand abortion rights? I think we can get there."

I'm sure anyone would work with the party if they got what they wanted. For instance, Kucinich would likely work with the party if he was promised a stand alone vote to pass a public option.

I know that Obama and the Democratic corporate leadership is trying to outdo the Republicans and force a private tax on citizens to subsidize the for-profit insurance industry plus make every American purchase a purposefully defective and outrageously expensive private health insurance plan, but I wasn't aware of any "health care reform".

that we pretend that clusterfuck is reform. I'm with Dennis on this one. It is simply unacceptable that a sitting Dem President with majorities in both the House and Senate can't deliver something better. They could have done far, far better. They didn't. And some of us don't have the luxury of waiting another couple of decades for the issue to be revisited. Fuck 'em.

Being forced to purchase useless health insurance they can't afford will send a great many Americans over the edge financially. The insurance mandate part of the bill would take effect immediately. And those few who would receive subsidies for insurance wouldn't receive subsidies for 2-3 years from now.

A bill with no cost containment, no caps on premiums or deductibles or co-pays while being mandated to be purchased from private insurers who have a 30% overhead to pay for their 10 million dollar bonuses will make things WORSE, not better.

With this bill people will STILL die, only they will have to PAY for that privilege.

131. If status quo is not sustainable, another attempt to fix it will be necessary.
A shitty bill with half assed solutions allows a watered down version of the unsustainability to continue... and allows the health care monopolies to continue to bleed the economy and the public, at a slightly reduced rate, for longer before the unsustainability forces another attempt to come up with another half assed attempt to create a "solution" which allows the industry to continue bleeding the public and the economy even longer still.

A semi-real solution like the public option is looked upon as being too radical? Fine... let the whole fucking system crash... then maybe there will be enough desperation to actually create a real fix. If that's what it takes, so be it.

as his status as uninsurable after surviving a bout of Cancer has left him without insurance as the law currently stands, and that's more of a death sentence long run...which compare to sandwich, we'll take the sandwich!

It's time for Kucinich to own up and understand that no matter what he says, his actions will speak louder than rationalizing words of his "unatainnable" wish....to millions.

Kucinich can vote against My nephew's chance to gain access to Health Insurance while voting to help the insurance companies (who have spent millions) defeat this bill, as he can certainly do has he chooses, But there should'nt be anymore questions as to whose side Kucinich is on; he won't be on my Nephew's side, he will be on the side of Insurance companies.

37. What? I think you've got this all backwards, Frenchie.
This bill will mean the insurance companies will not be able to deny insurance. It does NOTHING to make that insurance affordable.

If the premium costs 28K/yr, with $5000 deductibles and equally unmanageable co-pays, will he be able to GET the insurance that they cannot deny him? If he can't afford what is offered, regardless of the price, then that means HE is REFUSING the insurance that the company cannot deny him.

If you cannot pay for it, it doesn't matter if it is available or not. Now maybe in your nephew's case that won't be a problem - maybe you are independently wealthy. But there are MILLIONS out there who will not be able to pay for what cannot be denied. That means only the wealthy will benefit. Again.

Is THAT reform?

69. That is not an answer.
How does this bill help the millions who are on the edge - too poor to afford insurance, but not poor enough for government assistance? Even if they have the insurance, can they afford to USE it? Again, what good is coverage if the premium costs more than the person who needs it can afford to pay?

The end result of this is a return to the 19th century, where you pay or you get charity and the charity pays. Or you die.

Seriously, if the bill passes and private insurance cannot be denied to your nephew, and they offer a policy that costs $2500/mo and has an $8000 deductible, would he be able to afford it? Could he use such a policy?

It's because I DO give a shit that I don't believe we should settle for a bill that goes only one way, helps only the insurance industry.

The only help insurance companies are getting are from folks like you,
as you have made it your business to determine for everyone else
what they should and shouldn't get....by using the excuse to wait for something better,
whenever that will be, and to just hang in there with the status quo.

TO me, that's like not really giving a shit, just having talking point to pretend as though you do.

Everyone should wait till you get what it is that you decide is acceptable.

Thank you God!

82. And you still did not answer the question.
Could he afford such coverage?

If he cannot afford the mandated insurance, then what good is it? It's like being handed the registration for a brand new car, but no keys. And, oh, you have to make the car payments anyway.

It is worthless. Why argue so hard for something that is worthless?

129. And you don't give a shit about my uncle..
who currently gets fantastic health care in S. America, where he pays out of pocket from his life savings at a fraction of what he would pay, even with insurance, in the USA. This bill means he will be forced to purchase a crap USA health insurance policy with copays he won't be able to afford, or he will have to pay the fine. That means he can either get another job (in poor health, in his 70s) or cut back on the care he is now receiving.

Two can play at your stupid game.

The result of this months long orgy between lobbyists and Democrats is a despicable trillion dollar corporatist bailout, without so much as a gossamer veil of consumer-friendly reform.

If results are everything, this result is pure disaster and despite the reasons we are told we must past reform RightThisMinuteNowOrElse, the end result will be a failure to help those who need it most.

28. Wendell Potter, the famous former insurance exec, and now hero to the Progressives disagrees with
Kucinich.

He's on Ed right now, and said that while it's not perfect, and doesn't have the public option, it's still good enough that it should be passed, and then revisit later this year or next year with more reform.

He said "take the deal". The exact quote Ed just extracted from him.

38. If he thinks this bill CAN be revisited again in a year or two
he is delusional.

If this bill passes, that will be the LAST we will see of reform for another generation. The 'fixes' in this bill are nothing but tweaks around the edges of the system (if you can call it a system), while mandating for the first time in history that citizens be taxed to benefit private corporations.

Both were fixed in multiple steps, and coverages increased, over 8 years for each.

Edited on Mon Mar-08-10 07:05 PM by RaleighNCDUer
The original framework of THIS is the madate to give tax money to private corporations. Do you really want to build on THAT?

A public option, even a very WEAK public option, could be expanded on to provide increasingly greater coverage. By specifically disallowing ANY public option, all that we have is a mandate to pay with NO guarantee of receiving care. The insurance companies cannot disallow for pre-existing conditions - but there is nothing that says they have to make the premium affordable or practical to use.

And again, it WILL NOT be revisited - why would it be, when the insurance companies have gotten everything they want? Passing this bill is throwing them into that there briar patch, and they couldn't be happier.

e.

To build on this would be to steadily lower the age at which people can join MediCare.

That's how you build on this.

If this bill doesn't pass now, then it truly will be a whole generation or more before healthcare is even touched again.

Remember when Clinton's HCR failed in 1993? How long did it take for us to revisit it? 15 years.

How many people were affected negatively by those 15 years, when they could have been helped by that bill?

Pass this bill and get a foothold for further reform.

61. Just HOW would that happen?
If we can't get a public option in as part of a package deal, how the HELL are we ever going to get it added as a stand-alone? Particularly now the the supremes have given corporations carte blanche to throw BILLIONS into the ring to fight it?

Passing this means that the system will be set in stone, and there will be NO substantive changes until it completely collapses in 15-20 years. By that time people will be assassinating health insurance CEOs and burning company buildings. There is NOTHING here that makes a foothold for reform - but it DOES establish a gawdawful precedent for corporate power. Have you EVER known a corporation to willingly give up power or profits?

It is not going to happen.

72. Not a good analogy. The analogy would be if SS had been a bill that ordered
Americans to buy a hedge fund account out of their own money in today's unregulated environment. The difference was SS and Medicare set us on the right path, just not as far down the path as we needed to go. This bill is going the wrong way-giving more power, not less, to the for profit insurance companies.

70. You must understand. Many here do not understand a Democrat who hasn't gotten with the new style of
governing. See, first a Democrat, who is a member of the party in the majority, has to state, firmly, the very weakest bill they will accept. Then, when the GOP and Blue Dogs say "no" to that the Democrat is supposed to further weaken their bill and go back and ask pretty please. When they say no again, you weaken it further and you might get to pass it if the GOP and Blue Dogs say, "Simon says," first.

Where I come from you don't give up the fight to push the bill towards being something better til it's signed into law.

I intend to keep pushing to get more help for people into this bill. I intend to pushing on it until they pass it and I intend to keep pushing so it doesn't go down the memory hole like 'fixing NAFTA' did. Or do we thing the "we'll reform the system if it's OK with the Republicans and Blue Dogs" is agood negotiating tactic?

52. So Dennis is voting against the Insurance Profits Protection Act?
Well, good for him.

This Bill will help no virtually no one but WILL be another transfer of the people's wealth to private profits via the various subsidies, etc.

Should anyone actually be able to USE those subsidies - the figures I've read will still leave any sort of comprehensive health "insurance" unaffordable for most people/families.

As someone else noted, being protected from denial of coverage does not mean you can afford to buy the "product."

The Bill is worthless; it will, at best, shuffle around who gets screwed the worst, who dies from lack of care, who goes bankrupt from medical expenses. Meanwhile, the Democrats somehow have convinced themselves that a wildly unpopular "mandate" to buy from profit-making providers will somehow resound to their credit, and a wildly unpopular tax on the so-called "cadillac" plans(actually just plans that actually provide a decent level of coverage) will somehow motivate people to come out and work for their re-election.

What part of that equation do yo NOT get?

There are plenty of people who die every year who HAVE health insurance but can't get the care they need because they can't afford it because the insurance company, after taking their premiums year after year, won't pay for treatment.

Meanwhile Blue dogs do everything in their power to make a piss poor weak add bill even weaker but you want to throw a hissy fit because someone wants to vote no in order to get improvements? Are you for fucking real?

Glad someone has the spine and brains to do the right thing!

123. The problem wirh Dennis Kucinich is
he has always been right. Even when I was sure he was off base, it turned out he was spot on. And I was giving too much credit to the Democratic Party.

So I think he should support it, if it comes down to 1 vote. But fight like your life depends on it right up to the call.

122. The truth is if Bush and the Republicans pushed this piece of crap, the left would be up in arms.
And rightly so.

126. I wish Dennis could accomplish more than standing for his principles.
If he believes this bill is as bad as he says it is, I wish he had the skill, interest, and principle to bring people together and bring forth some true organized opposition. Instead we get Dennis and another press release.

137. I'm no Kucinich fan. But this bill does nothing to reduce health care
costs--of which insurance premiums are a symptom but not the true cause.

Besides, it's foolish windmill-tilting to try and fail AGAIN at this before having accomplished ANYTHING on the economy. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

I'm surprised it's allowed to continue. You get almost as much pleasure bashing this liberal Democrat who voted with our party over 90% of the time as republicans do. More, maybe.

152. hooray for him, that takes real guts
something the "democrats" and their "leader" in the WH seem to be lacking.

kill the bill. it's only about lining the pockets of already-fat and very worthless insurance co. CEOs, and nothing more, with a mandated tax that nobody can afford.

if you think it's about "health care," I have a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you.
Thank "god" I will be eligible for Medicare in one more year and won't have this abomination to worry about--unless the "democrats" and their "leader" manage to skewer that, too.

and thank "god" for people like Dennis Kucinich, who remember what it means to represent We The People and not Them The Corporate Palm-Greasers.
