'Faith healing' parents sentenced

PORTLAND, Ore., March 8 (UPI) -- An Oregon couple was sentenced to 16 months in prison in the death of their son, for whom they prayed in lieu of medical treatment, authorities said.

Jeffrey and Marci Beagley were found guilty of criminally negligent homicide in the death of their 16-year-old son, Neil, who died in June 2008 from complications resulting from a urinary tract obstruction, The (Portland) Oregonian reported Monday.

The Beagleys, who are members of the Followers of Christ Church, did not seek medical care, opting for prayer and the laying on of hands.

Clackamas County Circuit Court Judge Steven Maurer said during sentencing the parents' decision not to get medical care for their son was a "crime that was a product of an unwillingness to respect the boundaries of freedom of expression."

If health care is so important, and those denying it to kids can go to jail, why the hell is our congress dragging it's feet to make sure we all are covered and have access? Hell, faith healing is all some folks got now..

Not saying the parents were right of course - just think it is interesting that the people we elected to get health care reform passed piss away the days while many suffer.

1. "health {insurance} reform passed piss"
"congress dragging it's feet to make sure we all are covered and have access"

Access to low actuarial valued policies (subsidized by your tax dollars) is not access to health care. These new plans could in fact be incredibly profitable due to self-rationing.

2. Faith or no faith, reality for too many is health care or roof/food
Parents face legal problems for letting kids go hungry too, but some can't provide anymore. Society should be facing jail time for letting things get to such a point.
