Boy sprouts founder had secret talks with NAZIs
LONDON (AFP) – Scouting founder Lord Robert Baden-Powell was invited to meet Adolf Hitler after friendly talks with the Hitler Youth about forming closer ties, secret British files released Monday showed.

Britain's Baden-Powell, who started the Scouts in 1907, held talks with German ambassador Joachim von Ribbentrop and Hitler Youth chief of staff Hartmann Lauterbacher on November 19, 1937.

Lauterbacher, then 28, was in Britain to foster closer relations with the Boy Scout movement and Ribbentrop invited Baden-Powell to tea with the Hitler Youth leader, newly declassified MI5 Security Service files revealed.

6. Considering that in 1936 the regime demanded that all German Boy Scouts
were forced to instead join the Hitler Youth, I imagine he did want to talk to them about it. That doesn't necessarily mean collusion.

12. My dad was a boy scout and never absorbed anything but good from it.
So I am not gonna jump on them.

Heck, his troop was sponsored by Mormons, and he quit when they put too much religious pressure on him. But the outdoor skills and character building principles made him a good man.

13. I quit cub scouts because the leaders cheated the pinewood derby
Not kidding.

The boys of the leader and assistant leader took first and second place respectively. That would have been fine except for a few facts:

1. Both boys had cars that lost at least one race.
2. There were three of us with undefeated cars.
3. Neither of the leaders' boys were in a race with any of the undefeated cars.
4. Our undefeated cars (obviously) were never put up against each other for a race.

There was no rhyme or reason as to how they lined up cars for races. It seemed random, but I'm sure they were trying to make sure their kids didn't go up against a faster car. It didn't work out, but they still got together to "figure out the results" and then announced the winners.

Cheating isn't what I was taught by my den mother.

14. I didn't quit cub scouts - cub scouts quit me.
My den mother had a nervous breakdown in the middle of my second year, and the pack kind of disintegrated.

We were a rowdy bunch for 8 and 9 year olds.

15. What, she didn't have Valium?
I don't know how ANY person can handle a group of 8&9 year old boys. That just sounds like torture to me.

16. 1961. Kind of pre-dated the valium era, poor dear.
I think what tipped her over was our doing target practice with the BB gun in the house. I don't know WHY that would upset her - what's one cheap vase?
