4. I would say... The fact that people are not perfect.
Edited on Tue Mar-09-10 03:40 AM by RandomThoughts
And from that lack of perfection corruption can get into anyone and work through them.

However the real question is not one question on the source of corruption, but is the questions.

where is most of it?
where does it do the most damage?
How much of it is there in any area?
Where can it be reduced and canceled out?

Then that question can help people lower the effects and quantity of corruption.

5. I'll take a stab... GREED
The world is more prosperous than ever before. This has led to a conflict in values systems. Every government and every system is overwhelmed by Greed.

That is simplistic, but probably one of the most prominent components. Our problems are not what system or government we have, but our VALUES, and GREED is the value that is causing the most havoc.

7. The shift to greed is really nefarious.
If you can get a person to think owning something or having money is most important all the time, you can cancel out there entire moral center, making them effectively have no morals.

What event would make you not accept more money for something? only if you think that thing is wrong. So what a person would do for money depends on how many times one of the other things they think is important would not interfere with desire for money. Same thing could be said for other things, but it is easy to see in the world of money first.

The expression that everyone has a price, what does that really mean... If it is true for a person, then they are owned by money.

14. I believe that Fear is a tool used to
acquire power and control which leads us to the money therefore I must support the notion that it is greed.

Just my opinion. :hi:

25. What is greed...
...but the fear of one's own unimportance or inability to deal with possible circumstances? Greedy people acquire things that they think will make them important or sustain them against life's tough breaks. They don't do that because they are confident. It is because deep-down they are afraid.

9. 'Money is the root of all evil'
That is an old saying. I think there is more than one source. Greed is one of them, but the lust for power is another. They are probably connected as money is necessary to be able to control others.

Maybe progressives should start thinking about that. We need to accumulate money. That is the weapon of the Corporations and they well armed. We are in a fight with them for this country and we are unarmed. We need to be able to out-bid them for the souls of Congressmembers. I've given up hope that they can be depended on to do what is right. Only people as strong and unaffected by greed like Dennis Kucinich and a few others, can be depended on to that. The rest we have to buy and not waste any more time attempting to reason with them.

10. Actually it is the love of money that is the root of all evil.
Edited on Tue Mar-09-10 04:28 AM by Lasher
This might seem picky but there is a big difference. This is a commonly misquoted Bible verse:

1 Timothy 6:10
For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.

This is a form of greed, more generally discussed upthread.

19. The wisdom of crowds strikes again.
People invariable remember the saying as "money is the root of evil"; whenever they do, someone always comes along with the correction, oh, but no, the bib. really says its the "love of money that is the root of evil", and that they are "misquoting" or some similar straw.

Why is that? Why is it so painful for some to entertain the notion that money, and not the love of money, is the great big evil?

Perhaps people's experiences have convinced them at some level that money is the root source of their many problems, so -- pop goes the weasel, right on cue -- here comes the ancient version of today's talking head telling them what to believe and how to think.

11. Too easy. It's very simply human nature. As far as I've been able to ascertain
having never really traveled, so all my information is from history and current events, there has never been a government or society with of 100,000 or more that doesn't have some level of corruption in it. It's just our nature, in our DNA. I've also yet to see in my personal life a person rise to a position of being able to be corrupt that didn't end up embracing it to some extent, perhaps it's a mundane as hiring cronies and family members at small businesses in order to get a contract from an entity when more qualified applicants are ignored, or as outrageous as much of what we discuss here with lobbyists, Wall St., bankers, and politicians effecting an entire nation. Once someone has the power and/or money, they slip into it. Yep, my vote is that it's simply human nature.

13. The source has been outed
It was buried deep within a body of unscrupulous flesh. When Neo went to the source to confront the city of machines, what was revealed was altered so the public would not know......the evil was emmanating from a chip in Dick Cheney's heart! It was passed off as a pacemaker, but in reality, it was indeed the "root of all evil" planted in a garden of pure hate and greed. It incubated quickly and spread like wildfire on a San Diego slope. By the time it was detected, it was too late. It had spread through christianity like a "virus gone wild".

The only way to fight it is to eliminate the infected. That will kill millions. I'm safe. Are you?

Wait for the movie "Dick Cheney:The devil's spawn"

18. Duh! Darwinism is obviously the answer...
"Survival of the fittest" was the beginning of the end. Anyone that can believe that they came from monkeys is capable of anything that monkeys are (like throwing shit). Jesus, Mohammad and the boys are the answer. Of course, there is that small disagreement twixt and tween those guys too. Perhaps they'll work it out. Well whoever wins will prove that Darwinism is the answer...

20. Nothing. Nothing is the source of all corruption in the world.
Do you really think the world is quite so simple & 1 dimensional that there is a single source to all the corruption?

If you really had to name ONE thing it would be so broad as to render the discussion moot.
Nevertheless, I'd say "free will", "the inate human drive to compete", or "limited resources".
