Steele made no apologies for a previous fundraising effort, which used letters marked "DO NOT DESTROY/OFFICAL DOCUMENT" and cast as a "2010 Congressional District Census."

House Republican Leader John Boehner, R-West Chester, followed that up last month with a similar mailing with what he called "the enclosed CENSUS DOCUMENT containing your 2010 Census of America's Republican Leadership."

Today, the House of Representatives is scheduled to vote on a bill that would ban such mailings. The Prevent Deceptive Census Look-Alike Mailings Act would require mailings using the word "census" to clearly show a return address and a disclaimer that the mailing is not affiliated with the U.S. Census Bureau.

In the meantime, Steele would not rile out similar efforts.

"If it's against the law, I won't. Until such time, this is an aggressive fundraising season," Steele said. "I appreciate the sensitivities. But until it becomes the law, I guess we can do those things."

And Michael doesn't know if something is against the law until a court of competent jurisdiction finds it to be so. Unless, of course, there is an appeal. Then he'll wait until that is decided before deciding not to do something. Carry it on long enough, and it ceases to matter if something is legal or illegal, because there's no penalty or punishment for doing it as long as the case remains alive. By that time, it'll be someone else's problem. It's the Republican way!
