22 y/o died of thirst in major U.K. teaching hospital, called police to beg for water

Neglected by 'lazy' nurses, man, 22, dying of thirst rang the police to beg for water
By Emily Andrews

A man of 22 died in agony of dehydration after three days in a leading teaching hospital. Kane Gorny was so desperate for a drink that he rang police to beg for their help. They arrived on the ward only to be told by doctors that everything was under control.

The next day his mother Rita Cronin found him delirious and he died within hours. She said nurses had failed to give him vital drugs which controlled fluid levels in his body. 'He was totally dependent on the nurses to help him and they totally betrayed him.' ...

The tragedy emerged a week after a report into hundreds of deaths at Stafford Hospital revealed the appalling quality of care given by many of the nurses. This week a task force called on nurses to sign a public pledge that they will treat everyone with compassion and dignity.

Because of course, medical malpractice/neglect NEVER happens here in the US, where we don't have national healthcare....

on edit: I very rarely use the "unrec", but I'm making this one of those rare situations....

15. Thought the same thing. Might want to point out we lose 100,000 here from medical/nursing errors
every year. Yay! Tort reform!

I read the article. He was behaving erratically because of a brain tumor and a lack of certain hormonal medications which the hospital staff were not giving him. The staff at the hospital couldn't tell he really was actually thirsty rather than just acting up again. Still, it's their fault, and the young man should have had better care, but that seems to be how it went down.

3. yes, that's dreadful if true, but the Daily Mirror is a disgusting
piece of right wing trash and they're on a mission to try and destroy England's health care system.

And do you actually think there aren't plenty of horror stories right here in U.S. hospitals? Grab a fucking clue, trolly.

4. Err, you mean Daily Mail right?
The Mirror used to be left of center. They were kinda famous for the "How can 59,054,087 people be so Dumb?" headline back in 2004.

17. Yep! We have to remember our for profit insurance companies have no where to go
Their market is declining here as people drop coverage and escape to Medicare. Of course they have their minions out propagandizing the populations of other countries in an attempt to gain a foothold in a new market. Doing the same shit in Canada, too.

California Nursing Home Fined $121,000 AFter Patient Dies When Ventilator Alarm Turned Off

Casa Bonita Convalescent Hospital has been hit with a $121,000 fine after a patient was disconnected from a ventilator and died at the facility. The ninety year old resident died in October 2007 after a remote alarm was turned off and staff was not alerted when the ventilator was disconnected. The facility was issued three citations in the incident, one of which was a "AA" citation, which is the most severe penalty that a nursing home can receive. The facility was fined $100,000 for failing to have a system that prevented the patient from becoming disconnected from the machine and for turning off the ventilator's alarm. The facility also assessed a $20,000 fine for failing to check on the alarm system and a $1,000 fine for failing to implement staff policies that ensured ventilator education and certification. The California Department of Public Health said that poor care at the facility caused the resident's death. The facility dusputes this finding and plans to appeal.http://www.nursing-home-abuse-lawyer-blog.com/2009/01/california_nursing_home_slappe_1.html

http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/07/01/waiting.room.death/index.html

NEW YORK (CNN) -- A 49-year-old woman collapsed and died on the floor of a waiting room at a Brooklyn psychiatric hospital and lay there for more than an hour as employees ignored her, according to the New York Civil Liberties Union, which on Tuesday released surveillance camera video of the incident.
Surveillance video shows a woman lying on the hospital floor for almost an hour before anyone helped her.

Esmin Green was involuntarily admitted to the psychiatric emergency department of Kings County Hospital Center on June 18 for what the hospital describes as "agitation and psychosis."

Upon her admission, Green waited nearly 24 hours for treatment, said the civil liberties union, which was among the groups filing suit against the facility last year seeking improved conditions for patients.

The surveillance camera video shows the woman rolling off a waiting room chair, landing face-down on the floor and convulsing. Her collapse came at 5:32 a.m. June 19, the NYCLU said, and she stopped moving at 6:07 a.m. During that time, the organization said, workers at the hospital ignored her.

Hospital patient dies in waiting room due to policy violations

A new report concludes that a patient died in the waiting room of a Pennsylvania hospital, unnoticed for more than 40 minutes after he died, because the hospital committed numerous violations of State Department of Health policy.

On Nov. 28, 2009, Joaquin Rivera entered the waiting room of the emergency department of Aria Health's Frankford campus. Rivera, 63, entered the ED at 10:45 p.m. complaining of pain on his left side. According to the state report prepared as a result of investigating the incident, surveillance footage showed Rivera stopped moving at 10:56 p.m.

Seven minutes after that, a hospital staffer called Rivera's name and noticed him staring at a wall, she told investigators for the state. Despite this, no hospital personnel checked further to see if Rivera needed medical help. In fact, hospital staffers didn't become aware of Rivera's condition until another patient told them what was going on--and by that point, Rivera's corpse had been robbed of his watch by vagrants, the state concluded.

The report concludes that the triage nurse appeared at the patient waiting room door entrance, but didn't enter between 10:45 p.m. and 11:47 p.m. to check on patient activity.

Woman neglected medical treatment; dies in hospital ER (Los Angeles)
http://en.wikinews.org/wiki/Woman_neglected_medical_treatment;_dies_in_hospital_ER

Thursday, June 14, 2007

A woman died in the emergency room of Martin Luther King Jr.-Harbor Hospital allegedly as a result of neglect on the part of the emergency room staff.

Edith Rodriguez, 43, died on the floor of the Martin Luther King-Harbor Hospital after numerous pleas for help. ER staff are reported to have ignored her complaints and she subsequently died as a result of her illness. The official cause of death was a perforated bowel.

It has been suggested that this isn't the first time that a death has resulted from apparent neglect at MLK-Harbor Hospital. In March of 2003, Oluchi Oliver, 20, died in that same emergency room, relatives complain that he, too, was neglected. The 20-year old died 10 hours after complaining of abdominal pains.

"She was lying in a fetal position crying on the floor and no one would help her," her lawyer is reported to have said. "The security guards were on notice that she was laying there. The police were on notice that she was laying there. The hospital staff was on notice she was laying there."

-----------------------------------

These are just the tip of the iceberg. I didn't even bother to list all of the stories about accidental overdoses administered by medical staff, incorrect surgeries performed due to chart mixups or just incompetence, and so on. There are thousands of these stories... and they happen right here in the good ol' USA with our wonderful healthcare system.

13. UK - 30,000 US - 100,000 die of medical mistakes
As many as 30,000 people die as a result of medical errors every year, according to the UK's leading health publication.

The British Medical Journal is calling for a rethink of health care systems and training to cut the number of mistakes made by doctors to the low levels of errors among pilots or nuclear plant workers.

The editor of the BMJ, Dr Richard Smith told BBC Radio 4's Today programme: "Probably 20-30,000 people a year in Britain die of medical errors but then of course many more will be injured and suffer other consequences."

I think we have a culture in medicine which doesn't quite acknowledge that all these errors happen

Dr Smith said the figure was extrapolated from an American study which suggests that about 100,000 US citizens die each year from preventable hospital mistakes.

US Census Bureau data re: UK:
According to an estimate by the US Census Bureau web site (see link below) in July of 2008, the UK total population was estimated at 60,944,000. This was projected based upon the 2001 UK census and the annual rate of growth estimates.
