'Miracle' baby elephant

Most of Melbourne went through labour with Dokoon, an asian elephant, before she gave birth to a healthy girl at Melbourne Zoo a few weeks back. It was distressing to read that Porntip (no, don't laugh, it's a Thai name), a pregnant female at Sydney's Taronga Park zoo, had lost her calf and was in labour with a dead baby elephant.

Then she gave birth.....to a live boy!

It seems he survived the difficult labour by lapsing into a coma, thus the zoo vets couldn't detect vital signs.

portland zoo as a kid. What a lovely animal, elephants. Lovely babies, lovely family units. Love them.
