RW fueling new, quickly spreading lie: Obama intends to outlaw FISHING all over America.
Edited on Wed Mar-10-10 10:15 AM by blm
Fishing and sports sites are being targeted for this campaign. The backlash from America's fishermen is no doubt meant to be felt in November.

Here's an example from an opinion piece at ESPN.com. Not an ESPN report...just an OPINION piece from a RWer at their website.

http://sports.espn.go.com/outdoors/saltwater/news/story?id=4975762

This stuff is despicable. Not ONE established fact is used as the base for the spreading lie, just the clear implication from a RW opinion columnist that Obama has already decided to ban all fishing.

Here's the counter for this RW lie....it's another HOAX.

http://news.spreadit.org/obama-fishing-ban/

>>>>>>>>
Obama Fishing Ban:To Ban Sport Fishing? – Obama fishing ban hoax is spreading like wild fire on the internet.Earlier today few media outlets including ESPN decided to report a false story that claimed Obama was planing to ban fishing as a sport. The truth of the matter is that the administration has decided to back a worldwide ban on fishing or trade in Bluefin Tuna in hope to preserve the stocks that remain. The New York Times has more on the story:

“There is no doubt that the species is in desperate trouble. Stocks of Atlantic and Mediterranean bluefin declined by more than 70 percent between 1957 and 2007, and by more than 60 percent in the last decade alone. Stocks in the Western Atlantic, including the United States, have stabilized but at a very low level. The decline has been driven by a growing global appetite for tuna, and by the rapid mechanization of industrial fishing, chiefly purse-seining operations that allow for the capture of entire schools of tuna at once.”

To the 60,000,000 Americans who enjoy fishing, rest assure no one will be banning your favorite activity.ESPN has yet to refute the lie they published.
That’s all we have for now on Obama Fishing Ban hoax.
>>>>>>>

Grab your shovels.

I hope SOMEONE in the WH has a plan to put out this fire nationally. An Obama interview on ESPN or a fishing show before the end of March would be a smart move.

JUST ADDED: This smear was posted HERE at DU in the Science Forum, fer chrissakes.

1. It is despicable
But I also don't think the president should jump just because some dimwits shout "Frog!" Let this nonsense collapse of its own light weight. If you have a friend, relative or acquaintance spouting this garbage, write it down, date it, and have them initial it. Then ask them every month or so how that fishing ban is coming along. Along with the confiscation of all firearms. And any other loony right wing bullshit the monkeys have flung from their cages.

3. That would be great except this fire is already blazing and spreading quickly.
And it is being done at sites where anyone posting counters are considerably outnumbered and shouted down.

BTW ESPN has right wing connections and the right knows that spreading a lie to stir up
the low information base helps them. Just like Obama was going to ban bullets and all these
idiots went out and bought thousands of rounds of ammo.

Obama has people taking a real look at the wild stocks of ocean fish .... many of the
species are crashing .... sharks, billfish, tuna, wild salmon, cod, and shellfish .... this is a
very serious problem and needs to be addressed.

He'd have caught several had he been using a spinning rod, though. Now, I like fly fishing personally, but it's a bad choice for a first-time angler. The beginning efforts are a bit frustrating, and Obama didn't have a lot of time to learn.

I've taught a lot of people to fish, and they're far more likely to continue if they have good success on their first outing. Normally, I take them to my favorite panfish lake, put an ultralight spinning rod in their hands, and an ordinary garden worm on the hook (I use tiny circle hooks to avoid injuring the fish). I can virtually guarantee that they'll catch as many sunnies, crappies, and maybe a bass or two as they can stand.

Once they're excited about this new sport, I introduce them to other ways to fish and other fish to angle for. Works every time.

put a few split shots in front of them then a worm or minnow
and you can almost always get fish

North of you it kills smallmouth bass, walleyes, pike, and even brook trout.
In Ohio farm ponds bass jump on it.

pike fishing :loveya:

Put me in a back bay in about 10' of water along the edge of weed bed and send
Mr. Pike to see me ..... I once had one in Canada that was a monster ..... it broke
my rod* and snapped the line ..... i played it for 10 minutes but when it got close
to the canoe the pike thought he had had enough.

31. I'm a light tackle sort of guy.
Edited on Wed Mar-10-10 12:09 PM by MineralMan
Last Fall, I was at my favorite lake, fishing for bass and northern pike with my usual light (not ultralight) spinning rig. 6 lb. test line, light 6' rod. I was throwing a 3/16 oz. triple willow spinnerbait (Booyah Mini-shad) into some lily pads. I saw a big swirl on the edge of the pads, just as I had retrieved the lure. I made a quick cast past the swirl. Bam! It wasn't a bass. It wasn't a northern. It was a freaking muskie!

Took me a while, but I got the thing into the net. I carry a big-ass net all the time, given what's in these lakes. It wasn't a big muskie, just about 36" and 12 lb., but it was the most fun I've had fishing for a long time.

The poor spinnerbait was completely destroyed, though, so I've got to buy some more for this season.

The panfish rig I use is very simple. Ultralight spinning outfit. I just tie the tiny circle hook to the end of the 4 lb. test line, hook the garden worm (not a nightcrawler) once through the girdle, and cast that into a pocket in the weeds. No bobber. No weight. The weightless worm drifts down, wiggling all the way. The largest sunnie or crappie in the area always whizzes out and grabs it. You never catch potato chip sunnies...the big ones push them out of the way. If the line moves, you just start reeling. No hook set at all. The circle hook hooks the fish right in the corner of the mouth or, with crappies, on the edge of the mouth. No stress, no strain, and an easy release. Every once in a while a nice bass will take the worm. My biggest on that rig was 4.5 lb. What a blast!

Every cast with that rig means a fish. Literally. I've used it in several lakes. If there are weeds, you catch fish. It's amazing. It means that I can take kids fishing and absolutely guarantee that they'll catch as many fish as they can stand.

42. I've done it, but not often.
Once, though, when I was about ten years old, I was exploring a small creek in southern California, not far from my home. I saw a flash in a pool in the stream. A big flash. So, I waded into the pool and headed for the mossy overhanging bank where I'd seen the fish go.

Ever so slowly, I felt around under the bank. I found the fish and slowly and gently felt along the fish's belly. It was BIG. I finally reached the gill covers and got a finger in there and through and into the fish's mouth and pulled it out.

Of all things, it was a steelhead, about 24" long. In this tiny, tiny creek. It was long enough ago that steelhead still were running in Southern California. Back in about 1955.

So, I carried that steelhead home, hooked onto my finger. I was already an experience fish cleaner, so I cleaned it and wrapped it up in aluminum foil. When my Mom got home, I showed it to her, and we had nice pink-fleshed steelhead for dinner that night.

The only downside was that my father scolded me a little for using an illegal fishing technique...but he ate his share, anyhow.

I've noodled for other fish, too, mostly in the tide pools up near Morro Bay, CA. Pulled a big ling cod out of there once. Ate that one, too.

48. Yeah, they used to run there. You could fish for them, too, back
in the 1950s. They stopped running in Southern California in the 70s, despite a closed season. The end of steelhead runs slowly moved up the coast of California. Now, I don't think there are any steelhead spawning south of Monterey Bay. And there's virtually no stream fishing allowed south of Monterey. The trout are still there, but you can't fish for them.

I last caught one south of there in 1969, in a small creek feeding Morro Bay. I released that one, of course, but they're not running there any longer, either. Fishing for steelhead was still permitted then, but only at the mouths of creeks anywhere south of Monterey. Nobody bothered. It wasn't the angling pressure that did away with Southern California steelhead, though. I'm not sure anyone knows the exact reason, but their range has shifted northward for decades.

There's a small stream that flows through San Luis Obispo, CA. San Luis Obispo Creek. There are still many rainbow trout there, but no fishing. Standing on one of the bridges over the creek, you can look down and see rainbows up to 18". They no longer go to sea, though, and remain in fresh water. They do spawn, though, and they're all natives. There is some illegal fishing going on, but I never did it.

Now, I live in Minnesota. Fishing is great here, and there are numerous lakes and streams within half an hour of my home. I'm loving it.

71. good deal!
i was with a friend canoe fishing in the French river in Ontario ....
we always gambled on the biggest and the most fish on a trip .... about $50.00

my friend caught a little smallmouth bass and was pulling it in when a huge
muskie grabbed it ..... he had on a steel leader w/ about 12 lbs test line .....
he played that fish for about 20 minutes and worked the muskie towards the canoe
and kept thinking that the muskie would be hooked via the hook in the bass ...
about '4 from the canoe the muskie jumped out of the water and spit the chewed
up little bass in my friends lap .... he pitched his rod and net into the river after
the muskie .... 20 years later I still laugh.

btw the best fish I ever caught was a wild 10" Brook Trout in a little stream in central
Wisconsin in July .... 90 degrees in the air ... the stream was still cold and loaded w/
sand .... what a pretty fish .... I let it go.

Anti-Obama bloggers running wild with irresponsible ESPN story about President Obama's fishing ban
By Dennis Bakay at 9:00 pm on Tuesday March 9, 2010

There's a wild, crazy internet rumor making the rounds around the internet tonight regarding President Obama. The anti-Obama extremists are out in obamafull effect and running wild with an ESPN story about Obama's plans to ban fishing in the United States.

Shown is a brilliant comment by an Obama basher, on nowpublic.com "I think Obama is a idiot and a disgrace to our country. Banning fishing is a violation of our rights and shouldn't be possible. If that happens our hunting rights is in danger. What's next? I hope people dont vote him in again."

Calm down there. Obama isn't about to ban fishing. The truth is, the Obama Adminstration is backing a plan to ban the fishing of bluefin tuna in efforts to preserve remaining stocks. The New York Times reported yesterday that the Obama Administration backed a proposed trading ban on bluefin tuna by Monaco. Just how that translates into Obama wanting to stop American citizens from fishing for muskies in local lakes is beyond me.

Then you have the likes of "Right Pundits" who use this rumor as another excuse to trash President Obama. The title of this article reads, "Obama to ban fishing? What next?"

Obama Wants $475 Million For Great Lakes Cleanup

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. — A budget proposal from the Obama administration would spend $475 million on beach cleanups,
wetlands restoration and removal of toxic sediments from river bottoms around the Great Lakes.

The spending represents a first step toward a multiyear campaign to repair decades of damage to the battered ecosystem.
It also seeks to ward off new threats by preventing exotic species invasions and cutting down on erosion and runoff.

Obama Moving to Limit Fishing Access
Wednesday, 10 Mar 2010 09:02 AM Article Font Size
The Obama administration has announced that it will accept no more public input for a new federal strategy that could prohibit U.S. citizens from fishing some of the nation's oceans, coastal areas, Great Lakes, and even inland waters.

Fishing industry insiders have negotiated for months with officials at the Council on Environmental Quality and bureaucrats on the task force. These angling advocates have reportedly come to suspect that public input into the process was a charade from the beginning, according to an ESPN report.

The wingnuts used to smear Clinton with crap like this about every other week.

Though I have to say that right wing propagandists are quite skilled. They know how to precisely push the buttons of their mouthbreathing base.

and if it keeps picking up steam, you just know that the cable news shows will spend a whole hour on it, including a RW guest (maybe that ESPN columnist himself) who gets to keep propping up that lie on national TV

47. Which is exactly why I question the motives of anyone who spreads this lie in the corpmedia or here
at DU. No one with even half a brain would believe this, yet, the lie is gaining in intensity around the internet sports groups.

52. I think it's been firmly establish that no lie is too absurd or nonsnsical to be laundered by the RW
Lie Machine & Corporate M$M Fusion.

It will work. It always works. God I wish it weren't so, but the American Empire's National Dialog is incapable of distinguishing lies from truth anymore.

What's crazy is that advertising & PR killed the Enlightenment, by showing the Global Rulers that people are not creatures of reason, and cannot be made into creatures of reason because of our evolutionary hardwiring.

Enjoy trying to debunk this latest in a long line of increasingly aburd RW Lie-Memes.

I am not sure if it's right to say they 'enjoy' fishing. I used to go fishing when I was a kid, but I am not sure I ever enjoyed it. It wasn't really any more fun that watching "The Price is Right". Now neither my father nor my brother nor I ever go fishing.

59. I saw this on AboveTopSecret, a conspiracy website,
yesterday I like to look at (there are many right wingers there so I sort of consider it opposition research). The original poster was ranting and raving all over the map about Obama was going to outlaw fishing, then he was going to come for your guns and how it was time for a revolution, etc. You know the drill. Anyway, the first comment post brought things back to reality and explained - in words of one syllable or less so that everyone could understand - that the ban was only about blue finned tuna and that it was necessary in order that the species have a chance to recover and not be fished to extinction. It was nice to see some common sense being applied.

Firestorms get started in a variety of ways, especially on politicized issues.

ESPNOutdoors.com inadvertently contributed to a flare-up Tuesday when we posted the latest piece in a series of stories on President Barack Obama's newly created Ocean Policy Task Force, a column written by Robert Montgomery, a conservation writer for BASS since 1985. Regrettably, we made several errors in the editing and presentation of this installment. Though our series has included numerous news stories on the topic, this was not one of those -- it was an opinion piece, and should clearly have been labeled as commentary.

And while our series overall has examined several sides of this topic, this particular column was not properly balanced and failed to represent contrary points of view. We have reached out to people on every side of the issue and reported their points of view -- if they chose to respond -- throughout the series, but failed to do so in this specific column.

This series started in October and has included several updates on how the creation of that task force and its actions could impact recreational anglers. ESPNOutdoors.com should have made it clear to all readers that this was part of a larger series, and -- even though this was Montgomery's opinion, and those of the sources quoted in the column -- we should have taken more care to fairly represent opposing arguments.

We do feel it is our duty to cover issues surrounding outdoor sports to the best of our abilities, and given the nature of this task force and the potential impact on all fisherman, this was an appropriate topic to address for our audience. We take seriously the tenets of journalism that require we take an unbiased approach, and when we make mistakes in the presentation of a story or a column, it is our responsibility to admit them.

Any confusion on that part rests entirely on my shoulders as the executive editor of this site.

We have appended the original column to note that it was in fact a commentary, and we will institute more rigorous editing safeguards in order to prevent such issues in the future.
