The Navy says that three dogs died and dozens more were in poor health after being neglected by a private security contractor in Chicago that had been hired to train the dogs to detect explosives.

A team of military handlers discovered the dogs last October at a facility run by Securitas Security Services USA after the Navy terminated its $7.5 million contract.

Navy spokesman Capt. William Fenick said that of the 49 dogs discovered, two were dead and the rest were in poor health. Another dog died soon after being recovered.

Securitas Security Services did not immediately provide comment.

5. This is what mercenaries do
The contract was terminated, and they're done. So they had 49 dogs they were training? The money stopped coming, so that's no longer Securitas Security Services' problem. It's like people don't understand the Magic of the Free Market.

8. Correct!
And people don't understand the mentality (to begin with) of what it would take for someone to actually be a paid merc! Frightening!

7. war is brutal toward all beings.
when you enter war you enter the most brutal place.
it is unavoidable not to bring the brutality home one way or the other.

13. That is always my reaction also. People who are contractors often have served three or four tours

And once back home, cannot even bring themselves to parent their children or be nice to their spouse.

My heart breaks over the thought of what happened to these animals though.

11. This makes me sick. We are losing our compassion as a race.
And,

As far as I'm concerned, dogs are people too.
This should not be allowed to happen.

12. This shouldn't happen at all
esp. dogs in service to the country should not be treated like this. :(
