Howard Stern takes me from sheer delight to utter comtempt
Wonder if she were male would he feel the same way?

Howard Stern slams Gabourey Sidibe over weight, says her career is over - but she's got new roles

Howard Stern blasted "Precious" star Gabourey Sidibe on his Monday radio show, viciously mocking her weight and doubting her abilities as an actress.

"There's the most enormous, fat black chick I've ever seen. She is enormous. Everyone's pretending she's a part of show business and she's never going to be in another movie," Stern ranted. "She should have gotten the Best Actress award because she's never going to have another shot. What movie is she gonna be in?"

And the fact that some of Hollywood's most powerful players (uh, like Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry) are among 26-year-old actress' biggest supporters, doesn't mean squat to Stern.

He knocked Winfrey, who praised Sidibe at the Academy Awards Sunday night and said she was sure Sidibe would have a long, fruitful career.

someone needs to remind Howard that beauty's only skin deep.

I happen to think Ms. Sidibe has a beautiful face, attitude and personality.

People that hate him can't wait to hear what he'll say next and people that love him can't wait to hear what he'll say next. And sometimes the same people are in both categories.

8. I can't stand him
I applaud his recent awareness over free speech issues and the idea that the * admin lied to us about well. everything. But his attitudes about women have always set my teeth on edge.

The only think he likes women for are T&A on his show. Usually blonde and with or with out tops and hot pants. :P

I wish Gabourey Sidibe every success because she's that talented.

I typically find Stern pretty funny, too, but that comment was uncalled-for.

Gaborey Sidibe's career is going to be just fine, with or without Howard Stern's approval.

13. He has definately shifted to the left in his views on social issues.
Howard has become a huge advocate for the gay community and George Takai has become one of my favorite people since becoming a semi-regular on the show.

He still needs to asses his views on women, but for some reason I get the feeling he dotes on his wife.

He's evolving for the better as he ages and mellows.

If you have listened to him in the last 5 years on satellite you know what I mean........

And he'll never stop the misogyny. That would alienate his fan base.

I love Howard, but please don't paint him as a humanitarian. He has little use for any woman he's not interested in nailing.

always fallen back on fart jokes, but he has evolved over the years.......... Around here, he's just slightly below Hitler and beating Dick Cheney on the dickhead scale.

He's been very vocally anti-Bush, pro-gay, anti-war and an animal advocate for quite a while now.
He has battled the FCC every step of the way for free speech.
He saved the life of a suicide jumper in the nineties.
He stayed on the air during 9/11 and was fucking compelling.
He's given a voice and launched careers for people that would otherwise have be pushed aside and shit upon in our society.

A lot of times he just says stupid, regretful shit. He's human.

18. Howard Stern has always been a misogynistic racist homobigoted POS.
I actually blame him more than Limbaugh for the polarization and coarsening of the culture. Both he and Limbaugh feed red meat to bitter entitled white men every day. But at least with Limbaugh the political agenda is obvious and it's not particularly "cool" to be a fan of his. Stern gives hipster cred to being a hateful bigoted asshole.

74. I wouldn't call Stern worse than Limbaugh...
I wouldn't call Stern worse than Limbaugh, rather I would place them both on the same plane-- in that both validate through the use of hateful language the minimization and objectification of minority demographics; the only difference being one uses the political playing field to hurt people whilst the other uses the cultural playing field to hurt people.

The defenses I hear re: Limbaugh are the same precise defenses I hear re: Stern-- only the names and the targets are different.

I call Stern worse not because he's more hateful than Limbaugh, but because his effect is more widespread and pervasive. A liberal can enjoy Stern disparaging women and minorities every day with impunity.

Edited on Fri Mar-12-10 02:55 AM by Hello_Kitty
This gives him a free pass to spew vitriol against fat black women.

"There's the most enormous, fat black chick I've ever seen. She is enormous.

Clearly motivated by concern for her "health".

"She's telling an enormous woman the size of a planet that she's going to have a career."

Again, we should be praising Stern for his principled stand against fat black women being allowed to be seen in public for health and fitness.

Warren, if this is about health, why is the vitriol necessary?

Except this time, right? You know, this time, when the woman in question wins the Oscar? And let's not forget that Oprah Winfrey was herself nominated for the Oscar, when she wasn't so slim as she is now.

Stern is an ass. He's the perfect example of "I got money honey, and forget that you're the mother of my children, but this kinda money is gonna get me a younger model."

Every, and I mean every, time there is an OP about someone being insulting or cruel to a fat WOMAN the concern trolls come out, with their reminders that being fat is sooooooo unhealthy. So much so that we need to "help" fat women by treating them as less than human.

Meanwhile, Kevin Smith was mostly treated like a hero.

Kevin Smith was not treated like a hero. His fans all piled on him like I've never seen before.
The truth is she is MORBIDLY OBESE.
That is not attractive.
And yes, it is very unhealthy and in Hollywood, morbidly obese actresses do not get as much work as skinny actresses. Unfair? Yes. But, that is how it works.
Given a choice to put Megan Fox(who can't act her way out of a paper bag) or Gabourey Sidibe(who was nominated for an Oscar), to star in a romantic comedy, who do you think they are going to cast?
In a perfect world where gumdrops rain from the sky and world leaders hug it out instead of going to war, Gabourey would be cast.
On this planet? Megan is a shoe-in.

Oh, the fat must counteract those two things about her. I see. I am sure she is well aware of her weight. I am happy that she has the confidence to show up and be herself at these events in spite of her weight. I don't think she is making kids grow up thinking "ooh, I want to be fat".

113. Maybe You Should Give Accepting People For Who They Are a Try?
I'm sure you're only concerned for health reasons, right? Well, thin people can have all kinds of habits that render them just as unhealthy as you imagine overweight people to be. And overweight does not automatically = unhealthy.

Maybe you should stop being so judgmental.

40. One thing i've always liked about Howard Stern is that
Edited on Wed Mar-10-10 08:28 PM by Hawaii Hiker
he can goof & make fun of himself....He constantly pokes fun at his looks, & often says (paraphrasing) "I've been going to a psychiatrist 3-4 days a week for 2 decades now & I'm still a mess", etc..

Most celebrities are wound too tight, & could never poke fun at themselves, whereas Howard is a master of self-depreceration..

BTW, todays show, the Tiger Woods Mistress Beauty Pageant was very good...

Lastly, even if you don't like Howard, he is a social liberal whose voted for the Democrat in every election since 1992....

Also, and the haters aren't going to like this, but he is a great interviewer...Sure he might get carried away w/the sex questions, but the guy can interview, doesn't kiss ass & will ask tough questions....

62. Do you listen to the show? I do and I am a non-smelly woman.
It's the only time that I turn off political talk radio.

I heard Howard make these comments on his show. It is being taken a little out of context. Yes, it is mean to say someone is fat, even if it is true but he has a valid point about her likelihood of being in other movies. Right or wrong, and he certainly was not saying that it was right, it is nearly impossible to have a career in movies or tv and be an overweight woman. That was the point he was making.

Also, if she adpoted a healthier lifestyle it would serve as a good example to young people who are obese that they can get healthy too.

86. Uh, everyone's "concern" about Sidibe's "health" is duly noted.
The OP is about Howard Stern hurling ugly misogynistic and racist invective at the young women. Her being fat gives him cover to do so, just as it does everyone who bashes fat women while couching their abuse in terms of "concern for her health". If you replied on this thread just to remind everyone that it's sooooooo unhealthy to be fat then I'm just going to go ahead and assume you are okay with Stern's comments.

To answer the OP's question, no, he would not feel the same way if she were male, nor would many of these DU commenters. It's not that fat men aren't subjected to plenty of abuse, particularly from asshole bullies like Howard Stern, but there's a particularly nasty kind of disdain shown toward fat women. To be fat as a woman is to fail in your duty to be a decorative object. To be very dark skinned is to be out of compliance with Western appearance norms too. That's why Stern is so vicious to Sidibe. How DARE she be a fat black woman and be able to be seen in public!

He's a misogynist and a bully and a truly ugly person, inside and out.

Like I said upthread, he's had a more corrosive effect on the American discourse than Limbaugh. He makes it cool to dehumanize women and anyone perceived to be weaker or different.

And no, having a black female sidekick doesn't mitigate it one goddamn bit.

And bringing lawsuits against your employer is just so easy-breezy. Seriously, one day when you're no longer in college and being supported by your parents you will see just how much shit people put up with on their jobs and the supposed recourse we have is a joke. I mean, being a white dude it won't be quite as bad for you, but you'll see.

And look, I get it. Stern is your hero. He makes it okay for you to consider other types of people to be less than you. He lets you think of women as walking subhuman fuckholes, even if you can't really treat them that way in public. You even get to still feel like a hip liberal while you're doing it because Stern likes gay people now and he bravely fought the FCC.

I know people like to give the token answer that she's a beautiful woman and she's a talented actress, but that doesn't get you anywhere if writers don't create roles that fit a morbidly obese, black woman.

Just think about the movies that are moderately successful each year. How many of roles can you think of that were written for a obese, black woman that weren't comedies about an actor in a fat suit laughing at obese people?

You can be angry at Stern all you want for pointing it out, but it's the truth.

119. Well, I'm not a scriptwriter for one thing.
For another, I was responding to someone who was acting as if the dearth of roles for fat black women was just the natural order of things.

121. It is the natural order of things.
In Hollywood, it certainly is.
and as an immense, morbidly obese PERSON, she is going to have problems.

123. And yet she is getting roles as we speak.
Which people on this thread seem to find hard to acknowledge. Because there aren't roles for obese black women. Or something.

Y'all are all so concerned for Gabi. It's touching, really.

124. I'm not concerned
Frankly, I don't know her and couldn't care less.
But, if someone did care about her, it would be better if they told her how MORBIDLY OBESE she is instead of buying her XXXL Hello Kitty PJs and telling her she has pretty eyes.
I won't hold my breath waiting for her starring role in a romantic comedy.

128. Gee, it's amazing how no one mentions that she's MORBIDLY OBESE.
The way you just did. And Howard Stern did. And thousands upon thousands of concern trolls on the internet and IRL.

She doesn't. She looks MORBIDLY OBESE.

122. It IS the Natural Order Of Things In Hollywood.
Precious destroyed expectations and did remarkably well, but mostly because of the Oscar nomination (and the fact that Oprah Winfrey told her slavish drones to go see it). If you're expecting to see a bunch of movies in a similar vein coming in the future, you're going to be disappointed.

The film industry is a business like any other, and, like any other business, it exists to make money. There is no reason to believe that duplicating Precious would be financially rewarding, and no reason to believe that writing a different kind of role for an obese black woman who isn't a painful stereotype played for cheap laughs would be any more successful.

Gabourey is doomed to a career of sassy supporting roles, if she manages to have a career at all. That's just the way of things.

125. So it's the invisible hand of the free market that causes Hollywood to be dominated by white men
Who ascended to the top production positions by dint of their innate superiority. Oh, and the reason that roles for white men so predominate is that white men are inherently more interesting than everyone else.

126. It is dictated by money
People don't pay to see morbidly obese actors or actresses.
They would rather pay to see good-looking folks, even if their acting is terrible.
Hence, the "acting" careers of Ben Affleck and Megan Fox, just to name two...

That still won't make people go watch something they don't want to watch.

130. No one's telling you what to watch.
I'm just telling you that hateful bigoted misogyny is hateful bigoted misogyny no matter how much concern trolling you do to disguise it.

For people who claim not to care about Gabi Sibide, y'all sure have a lot to say about her.

I didn't start this topic.
why don't you change the way Hollywood works?
And I saw nothing in that Stern's statement that was misogynistic, bigoted, or hateful.
She is immense and will have trouble getting roles in Hollywood.

139. Um...Excuse Me. When Did I Claim To Care About Her?
I thought she did a fine job in a good film. Beyond that, I don't care about her any more than I do about any other Hollywood personality. I wish her well, but really, what happens to her career doesn't concern me in the slightest.

And explaining the reality of the movie business to you is not attacking her. Your efforts to label the movie industry racist because people won't flock to see movies starring obese women make you look pretty silly.

154. The truth hurts
Unless she loses weight (which is something we all should want for her, if not she will be dead within 10 years) she will be nothing more then a novelty actress who will not get another leading role.
