Drug cuts cholesterol without side effects
Drug cuts cholesterol without side effects

MANHASSETT, N.Y., March 10 (UPI) -- U.S. and Swedish scientists have found an experimental thyroid drug reduces cholesterol without side effects suffered by some people using statins.

The researchers from the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research, Johns Hopkins University and Sweden's Karolinska University Hospital tested a drug called Eprotirome in patients suffering high cholesterol levels.

What is not known from the Phase II study is whether the drug will ultimately protect patients from heart disease, but Dr. Irwin Klein an endocrinologist at the Feinstein Institute, said he thinks it might work to reduce cardiovascular disease.

"Every percentage that you lower cholesterol, you lower the risk for heart disease," he said. "High cholesterol is the single most modifiable risk factor."

5. Interesting, but lots of folks have heart disease or attacks,
with normal cholesterol so just to make a point very clear, a cholesterol number is not the total picture. Most disease has to do with immflamation, and much has been written about the importance of C-reactive markers. Also, a lot of folks are deficient in the B vits which clearly have an impact on Homosystine(sp?) levels. And don't forget Vit D should also be taken. Just a little info, because clearly getting cholesterol levels to a certain number is not optimal. In fact, cholesterol that is too low is just as dangerous as too high. You need enough cholesterol to repair arteries when they are damaged from the immflamation caused by let's say, too much sugar, hydrogenated veg oil, etc.!
