Mississippi high school calls off prom after lesbian request to attend and wear tuxedo
this sort of decision will lead to hostility towards the student

Miss. school prom off after lesbian's date request

The Itawamba County school district's policy requires that senior prom dates be of the opposite sex. The American Civil Liberties Union of Mississippi had given the district until Wednesday to change that policy and allow 18-year-old Constance McMillen to escort her girlfriend, who is also a student, to the dance on April 2.

Instead, the school board met and issued a statement announcing it wouldn't host the event at Itawamba County Agricultural High School in Fulton, "due to the distractions to the educational process caused by recent events."

The statement didn't mention McMillen or the ACLU. When asked by The Associated Press if McMillen's demand led to the cancellation, school board attorney Michele Floyd said she could only reference the statement.

3. There is another post on this. Acutally there was also one last night,
but it was before they cancelled the prom.

I was hoping this small town of about 20-25,000 could take a step forward. Didn't happen. They did the opposite.

4. What will happen is that the students will organize their own prom, excluding those they dislike.
Like those segregated proms in the south.

5. It may end up happening. I am not sure.
I did hear of that happening in Georgia (I think it was Georgia, could've been Alabama), and it was terrible, but it also resulted in a huge outcry against it. I only hope this will be the same.

8. It tends to be the parents who do that type of shit
I bet you most students don't care if two girls go with each other.

Morgan Freeman paid for an integrated school sponsored prom at a high school in his hometown in Mississippi in 2008. The students thought it was a great idea, but the racist white parents just HAD to organize an all white prom (there was no all black prom ever again).

Interestingly enough the integrated prom went off fabulously, while at the all white prom there was a fistfight.
