65-year-old woman arrested for hoarding 60 dogs
http://www.salon.com/news/2010/03/10/us_dog_rescuer_raided/index.html

A California woman has been arrested after animal control officers found 60 dogs in crates inside her small Lakeside home east of San Diego.

Sixty-five-year-old Alice Via was arrested Wednesday for investigation of animal cruelty and neglect. She ran what she called the San Diego Boxer Rescue, and kept mostly boxers and Chihuahuas.

San Diego County spokesman Dan DeSousa says the dogs were confined in cages stacked two high throughout the two-bedroom 750-square-foot home. He says most of the dogs had injuries to their feet and noses from trying to escape, and some also had skin and respiratory problems.

The dogs will be taken to county shelters.

"The dogs will be taken to county shelters." Where, presumably, they will be confined to cages before being euthanized.

Also, "hoarding"? That seems like an odd word to apply to dogs, unless she was planning on eating them in the event of a food shortage

1. It's always a crazy old woman who does these things
How about rehabilitating the dogs and euthanizing the old woman!

2. Hoarding is a neurosis.
People can hoard all sorts of things: dogs, cats, newspapers, children...

3. Hoarding animals can be done by both sexes and is a mental illness
These people often feel they're doing the animals a favor but invariably the animals are sick, under extreme stress, filthy, and living in inhumane conditions. Often there are dead animals around, unnoticed by the hoarder.

It's a sickness. I hope they can help this old gal to realize she should never, ever try to take in animals again.

4. The article doesn't say anything about them being malnourished.

5. She has the same disease as Michael Vick.
Hoarding and abuse has a 100 percent recidivism rate.

I'm sorry she's 65 and probably poor.

I'm even more sorry that she won't get a "courage" award. :eyes:

8.  I don't think there's enough information to make that judgement.
What was the other option, sending them to kill shelters?

Were the dogs being fed? Was she doing the best she could to clean up after them? Was she trying to find the dogs owners so they wouldn't be killed?

There isn't enough information in this article to compare her to that sick bastard Michael Vick.

6. *sigh* The dogs were confined to crates in this woman's small home...however, NOW
The dogs will be taken to county shelters." Where, presumably, they will be confined to cages before being euthanized.

....wherever the saying "it's a dog's life" comes from, doesn't seem to be any winners here, particularly is you are a "dog".
