Moviegoer Tells Woman to Stop Talking On Cell Phone, Gets Stabbed in the Neck
By SCOTT WEBER
Updated 4:11 PM PST, Wed, Mar 10, 2010

A woman talking on a cell phone during a movie didn't take kindly to being "shushed" by another moviegoer. Or at least her boyfriend didn't.

In a drama that turned more lively than the one on screen -- "Shutter Island" -- the boyfriend allegedly attacked and stabbed the "shusher" in the neck with a meat thermometer. Sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore said the stabbing occured Saturday during a screening of the Martin Scorsese film.

According to KTLA:

Deputies say that while the movie was playing, a woman was talking on her phone and the victim asked her to turn it off.

The victim was attacked by the woman's boyfriend and another man. Deputies say he was stabbed in the neck with a meat thermometer.

The stabbing victim is expected to survive and is recovering at a hospital. Two others who tried to help the victim also were injured, according to Whitmore.

According to sheriff's officials, the suspects were described as black males. One man was wearing an orange hat with an orange jersey and the other man was dressed in a black hooded sweatshirt.

There was no word on why the man had a meat thermometer in a movie theater.

3. This almost sounds like some kind of gang initiation or something
Like remember how there used to be the urban legend about the gang who initiated members by having them drive around with their lights on in the daytime, and killing the first person who flashed at them? This almost sounds like that. Talk on a cellphone in a movie theater, and kill the first person who complains. It's unlikely, but it's not really any more ridiculous than any other explanation for such a random act of violence.

7. They have strict rules. What they need to figure out is how to....
... enforce them.

15. My cousin builds home theater rooms
the company he works for is booming, even in the recession they're hiring more people. People are getting tired of rudeness, cell phones, super high ticket and concession prices. I'm getting a 50 inch plasma tv in a few months and i will never set foot in a theater again.

19. A decade ago I use to go to movies maybe 3 times a month.
In the last 5 years I have gone to the movies exactly twice. Once for Avatar and once because some friends at work wanted to go.

I don't miss it.

I have nice HDTV, good sound system and Bluray. The PQ beats anything at the movie theaters and I avoid:

* ticket prices so high I could almost own the movie for price of single viewing for 2.
* people talking during movie
* cellphones
* sticky floors :puke:
* $30 snacks :mad:
* missing parts of movie if go to bathroom
* huge lines at end of movie for bathroom if I don't

and now I can add
* getting stabbed with meat thermometer. :)

20. yep, this is where I'm headed, too
Last weekend I went to one of those big-box theaters to see Alice in Wonderland. I got to the entrance, saw they had upped their price from $10 to $10.25, looked around at the overpriced snacks and hordes of high-school kids, and thought, "I don't want to see this movie *that* much."

In a few months I'll get the Bluray from Netflix and watch it on my HDTV, essentially for free.

16. So, apparently they have NOT caught the men who stabbed
or the girlfriend? It doesn't sound likely that they will, either with that minimal description...:shrug:

Another failure by Homeland Security.

23. The guy carrying a meat thermometer may be on parole.
He's probably prohibited from carrying a knife, but can carry and easily ditch the meat thermometer, which could be used as a shiv. Also, it would be difficult to pull fingerprints from the meat thermometer.

Who would carry a meat thermometer as a weapon? Someone who can't carry a knife or a gun.
