Fairly Amazing Chart on Relgion/Conservatives and Lifestyles
Edited on Thu Mar-11-10 09:47 AM by NeedleCast
The most religious states tend to havet he lowest IQs and considerably higher crime and poverty rates. They have the lowest health and contentent rate and generally higher numbers of people who self-identify as conservative. They also tend to have slightly higher divorce rates (with the exception of Nevada...hey, it's Vegas baby!)

Please note that I don't have anything to back up the statistical information in this chart, it's not my work. *Edit* Links to sites statistcs were taken from at bottom of chart.

1. no surprise that Mississippi tops the list
the classic hypocritical bible belt state. I note that we had the lowest IQ scores, too, making us the dumbest state in the union! Mississippi's Unofficial Slogan is: First in everything bad, and last in everything good.

2. Have to change some lyrics
"Almost hell -- West Virginia, Blue Ridge Mountains...."

at least according to the health and contentment ranking. What's happened in the 40 years since John Denver wrote that song?

6. I don't agree with your correlation of religiosity to crime and IQ.
Edited on Thu Mar-11-10 11:03 AM by harun
One could just as easily correlate it to racism.

Utah is more religious than the Southern states and they have a solid IQ and high charity giving.

Problem is the way racism and xenophobism is used to manipulate the population of the Southern Conservative states to continually vote for abhorrent fascist Republicans who support oppressing the poor and promoting the upper class. They use the few wedge issues they have to elect candidates who actively work against the economic interest of their constituents.

It's the scare factor. They're simply easier to scare in to action, even when that action is against their interest.

You could have at least spelled religion correctly in the subject header.

21. Amazing as it may seem, I'm in this thread because (1) I found the OP interesting, and...
...(2) I tend to read replies to threads I found interesting. Don't overestimate your importance.

If this makes you feel better, the R/T forum (a) is one I don't go to that often, and (b) contains many pro-religion threads that are easy to find.

But you knew that already.

Oh, I almost forgot! There's Christian groups too. Those, I won't touch with a 10-ft pole, ever. But of course, to post THERE, you'll have to direct a small portion of your hard earned money to the pockets of the DU admins, who are, of course, filthy liberals. I understand how that prospect may be unpleasant. But hey, there's still R/T.

18. It's pretty clear
That as religiosity rises, IQ falls. There are, I'm sure, a large number of other factors involved, but it does seem to be a factor.

Again, not my data and I do not know the methods used by the creator of the chart to achieve the numbers in it.

Edited on Thu Mar-11-10 01:07 PM by spoony
Just like with the other recent study about religion and IQ, that was posted about twenty times. You lot have pretty much staked your entire identities on being superior to religious people, as each confirmation bias post like this goes to show, and I have little interest in taking your binky away. I was just pointing out a bit of rich irony, is all.

25. You're projecting quite a bit
As I've made quite clear, I am neither the creator or the statistician behind the chart. I saw it, I thought it was interesting, and I posted it. There's a lot more data correlation in the chart than simply religion/IQ. It could just as easily be looked at to relate information between states with the highest number of self identifying conservatives to poverty rate or least charitable states to crime statistics.

But please, oh persecuted christian, feel free to continue bemoaning just how bad the vast christian majority are getting it stuck to them.

28. Who's wound up?
I don't really have a pony in this race other than an interest in the statistical correlations in the chart - which I've pointed out can be used to link any number of things with other things. You were the one to jump in here and suggest that I posted it to point out the link between religion and lower IQ. I'm afraid you're projecting again, as the tone of my posts simply doesn't suggest that I'm coming unglued.

Again, feel free to go on defending something that isn't being attacked. Would you like a hammer and nails?

31. Actually my issue was with the lack of language skills.
Since the OP has no idea how the conclusion was reached, but really likes it in a faith-based kind of way, there's no point in talking about the chart. I'm only still here to watch you clucking about me, but honestly even that's getting old.

9. Ranking by IQ would give you a cleaner table.
Seems like the smartest states also seem to be the most green across the board.

It's also why so many conservatives try to dumb down the population and keep them uneducated. Dumb people vote against their best interests because, well, because they're dumb.

But I tend to agree. The table appears to have been created by an amalgam of statistical data (links provided at bottom of table). I'm not sure what their method of corrilating the data was.

Poverty causes divorce? Damning to them.

15. Err...
I am uncertain about Utah's placement on generosity. Isn't that based on the fact that the larger mormon population is required to tithe to the church? How much of that generosity actually goes to help those less fortunate?

Just curious.

goes directly to the Mormon Church, who in turn use that to further promote their own disgustingly homophobic agenda!

41. We don't have this problem in Zoroastrianism. God is Wisdom.
So if you aren't getting smarter. Your not really practicing the religion properly.

It's not a matter of God being smart so we don't have to. We are obligated to learn from Him and His creation. Monotheism had a very highbrow start. But it's really gone down hill in the successive monotheistic religions.
