Interestingly enough, "Hurt Locker" and its Oscar met with a similar response at FReeperville...
...that is to say, some liked it, but many thought it sent "the wrong message" about the troops and the war, and many others thought it looked like "typical progressive crap" without having seen it.

Also, Avatar is not nearly as universally despised over there as one might think.

It's black and white vs. those who try to see the world in color. Political forums are lousy places to discuss art/entertainment.

2. "Political forums are lousy places to discuss art/entertainment"
AMEN to that. Appreciating the deeper issues presented by art and entertainment is fine. Projecting your own personal biases onto said art/entertainment? Not so much.

Wacka Wacka Wacka!!!

And vice versa.
:)

I thought it was an okay movie, though.
Didn't seem too 'Pro-War'...as many glorifying war movies are wont to do.

5. It was excellent and well deserved its Oscar.
Pro-war, anti-war? No, it SHOWED the war -- and that's anti-war enough.

It showed the twisted things war does to its participants, as well as to their victims.

4. I just thought it was a very mediocre movie when
stacked up against the likes of Platoon or Saving Private Ryan. So far, it's the only nominated film I've seen, but I can't see how it can be the best - doesn't say much for the rest. Oddly, I wasn't alone. My husband - a war/action movie addict - also gave it the thumbs down. Never thought of it as pro or anti war - wasn't powerful enough to evoke that discussion - just a weak movie. We were amazed it was nominated never mind that it won.

7. Because It's a Neutral Film, Both Sides Are Able To Project the Other Side's Politics Onto It
or there own.

The Hurt Locker was almost entirely apolitical.

10. It was purposely apolitical as the more political films about Iraq bombed at the box office in
recent years. You are correct, anyone can make their own assumptions about it depending on their political views.

11. I tend to bug out when DU'ers condemn movies they've never seen/haven't been released yet.
