Liberals Rip Durbin 'Betrayal' (New York Daily News)
March 11, 2010:

"Progressives are hammering Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin today after reports that he will tell senators to oppose a public option amendment.

Durbin, you see, was one of 41 senators to sign a pledge to support the public option.

So the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, along with Democracy for America, and Credo action, says it’s unleashed about 1 million e-mails calling on supporters to hammer Durbin.

“Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL) just announced that he would tell Democratic senators to OPPOSE all amendments, including a public option amendment, if offered on the Senate floor,” the message says.

“Durbin was among those who promised to vote yes,” it continues. “We need to make clear that strategy would be a major betrayal and signal to voters in an election year that Democratic politicians cannot be trusted to keep their word.”

Ouch.

1. It's OK. Obama said the bill he signs MUST include the public option.

5. hmmm this is in the "new york daily news" and not in the Chicago papers
I'd need more sources to believe this. I called Durbin's office a few days ago and they told me he is for the public option.

7. At least Durbin is honest about where he stands.
The reality behind the scenes is that the Senate didn't/doesn't want the PO and neither does the President. By now, that should be obvious. That all important Adam Green list is a little charade for the senators to act as though they tried.

8. Pollyanna liberals didn't see this coming.
Even after years of getting stabbed in the back on a rotating basis (see Glenn Greenwald's thesis, "This is how Democrats operate") by all the major Democratic players, in a strategy of plausible deniability, here comes good old DICK "I apologize to Republicans for saying mean things" Durbin.

Shocking. I'm shocked, I tell you. Couldn't see it coming, that a Democrat would sign-up for supporting Public Option FOR THE EXPRESS PURPOSE of betraying it and weakening it.

How could anyone have foreseen planes flying into buildings?
