Poll question: Have you ever driven drunk?
Coming north on I-95 on Saturday, I watched somebody who was obviously very intoxicated barely manage to keep his car on the road (at 75 mph).

Not sure. If so, I missed it.
I have no intention of starting a flameware in this thread.

5. I recall the horrible and scary memories
It was an after work Christmas party in 1977. I had way too much to drink but got in my truck and headed for home 30 miles away. How I ever got home without killing anyone or being stopped by the police I do not know. I remember enough to never, ever do that again and I haven't.

27. indeed! :)
I was pulled over years ago for riding ever so slightly over the yellow line.. I was doing a bong hit while driving and steering with my knee. The cop gave me a roadside sobriety test, which I passed, and sent me on my merry way. I told him I was just tired :)

7. In old movies, you see people driving drunk/drinking all the time.
It seems society is less tolerant of it now. Perhaps it's become more of a problem?

I doubt too many people would find a drunk driving scene funny in a movie released today, yet years ago it was considered funny.

Except, I guess, to those who'd lost a loved one to a drunk driver.

I remember one movie starring Andy Williams and Sandra Dee, where his Imperial Convertible had a built-in bar in it, and it was easily reachable from the driver's seat!

11. I discovered the joys of getting plastered at a shockingly young age
about the time one of my friends discovered a greasy spoon that would serve us beer in paper cups with straws in the back booth. We used to get tanked a couple of times a week on our way home from school.

Since frequent road rash afterwards convinced me I was not better at riding my bicycle drunk than sober, I learned a very important lesson.

I was mostly over alcohol by the time it was legal and I can honestly say I've never driven with drinks on board.

This choice is the closest to what you describe.

"I've driven after numerous drinks, thinking nothing of it."

13. It can be just as bad to drive tired or on a cell phone.
I was scared for my life one morning when my dad drove me to the airport at 5 AM. His reaction time was badly impaired. He never drinks that much in any case so I doubt he was hungover or anything.

All you gotta do is watch mythbusters to know that cell phones are hard to drive with.

39. No. That's wrong.
Driving after one beer (especially if it's piss like Bud Light) cannot possibly be equated with driving after "numerous" drinks.

I have been hit by drunk drivers on more than one occasion (thankfully at very low speed), and have never, ever driven drunk.

But there have been occasions when no one else was responsible enough to drive, everyone else being way too blasted to do so, and I was the only sober one, after one drink. So I drove. That's nowhere near what the option says.

This poll is fundamentally flawed.

15. Nope, never have, never will
I have a steel rod from my shoulder to my elbow and a big nasty scar on my shoulder from a drunk driver. I was 18 years old when it happened. I've also lost friends and a 14 year old cousin all killed by drunk drivers. No one who drives drunk gets any sympathy from me. If you are driving, don't fucking drink, and if you have had a drink, don't fucking drive. It's not rocket science. It's putting other peoples lives before your own entertainment. Drunk drivers are selfish, irresponsible people.

20. I flew a plane drunk one night...out of necessity.
Got drunk with my boss and some other guys in Detroit then got in a big fight with him...said basically "F-U, I'm going home" and got a taxi to the airport along with another guy who worked for the company. I told him to look around for a pilot to fly us home, I was -way- too drunk. He located a guy who said he would do it and we took off, I passed out in a few minutes and was sleeping when they both started shaking me...we were heading right into a line of thunderstorms and this guy didn't have an instrument rating. Yikes. I had to get a clearance and fly the last 100 miles or so. One-eyed it most of the way.

I started reporting at about 20 and saw, firsthand, what happens when you imbibe too much and drive - you wreck and die or kill someone else.

Don't do that now.

25. 1988 or 89 - Laurel to U of Md
We were living in Laurel MD. My husband at the time had a night class at U of Md. We had one car between us so I drove him to class and picked him up. I had been drinking that night. Hard stuff too, like Rum, IIRC. I was totally scnockered but went to pick him up anyway.

I somehow figured I'd be OK, because 1) it was a little 2-lane road and the max mph was 35 or 45 IIRC. I tried to keep it in the road as much as I could. I didn't swerve but I did hit the grass on the shoulder a time or two. Luckily the traffic was not heavy that night and there were no cops around.

I scared myself so badly I never did it again. I gave him the keys when he got in the car. :scared:

32. Years ago, did it all the time
We lived in a rural area and never had any way to get around except driving. The thought of staying over at the place we were drinking never entered our peabrains at the time. I quit doing it after waking up twice and not remembering how I got home and then checking the truck for damage, scared the shit out of me. That was also the end of my heavy binge drinking.

34. Shouldn't there be a few added options?
Such as, I've driven after one drink?

Or, I've driven after several drinks, but I waited several hours?

Or, I've driven after drinking, but I'm sure my BAC was below the legal limit?

37. More than one answer is good
Driven stone drunk, windows open for air, hand over one eye to stop the double-vision. Still had the sense to pull into White Castle for a bag of sliders (good for hangover prevention).

Driven with a beer in one hand, and forgot to lower it from the wheel when I pulled next to a cop. I forgot it was illegal, because I was so glad it wasn't a joint. The cop just shook his head and drove on. (That would not happen in these MADD days).

Then I got older (I REFUSE to say "old"), haven't done either in about 15 years.

40. I've driven while drinking and have driven when I was too drunk to drive
In Texas (some time ago, if not now) you could drink and drive as long as you were not drunk. I also have gotten daiquiris from the drive thru drink stand in New Orleans.

I like most people have also driven when I was way passed legally drunk, but I never felt that I was a danger (but I probably was).
