I don't know the answer, but I do know that both the GOP and the Democrats were wooing Eisenhower. What if he were to primary Obama ala Ted Kennedy in 1980? Word is that if the President doesn't appoint him as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff next year he would probably retire from the military.

In a time of domestic crisis, a general is not the answer..... and by the time 2012 rolls around, the wars, which is all that this particular general has experience at, will be over in Iraq, and most likely over in Afghanistan too.
Considering that he is still in Uniform, that makes him most unelectable, as Americans certainly aren't looking for one so still entrenched in the military to lead this country. Plus his boss is President Obama, and he needs to be working for this country, not campaigning as part of a party. That's one of the reasons that the military upper echelon are supposed to stay neutral, and not announce that they are of a particular party.

There were strikes in the cities, problems in the steel and railroad industries that would never be solved, and the nation elected a General. They may not be the answer but we have picked them before. I'd also say that if Colin Powell had called himself a Democrat he may very well have become President of the United States against Bush.
