Hey Coach! How ya doin'?

Coach Natalie Randolph

Woman named high school's head varsity football coach
By Jason Hanna, CNN
March 12, 2010 5:25 p.m. EST

(CNN) -- A high school in Washington, D.C., on Friday named a former women's professional football player as its head varsity football coach, a move that a national women's sports advocacy group calls historic.

Natalie Randolph, 29, a science teacher at Calvin Coolidge Senior High School, was introduced as the school's head football coach Friday in a press conference.

"We needed to find the best leader, role model, coordinator and instructor for our young men," Coolidge principal Thelma Jarrett said. "Natalie passed our first test -- she's proven herself as a great organizer, a leader who is knowledgeable about the sport as a player and a coach."

Students and faculty, along with Randolph's loved ones and former D.C. Diva teammates were on hand for the announcement as Mayor Adrian Fenty decreed March 12, 2010, "Natalie Randolph Day" in Washington.

2. That she is a science teacher is the most impressive thing to me.
And I hope she encourages her team members to excel in their academic skills.

3. ......
Self indulgent morning kick.

This seems to me a noteworthy, uplifting story, particularly as this is Herstory Month.

5. On ESPN's show "First Take',
I thought NFL player Keith Bullock was going to have a coronary. He said things like 'What happens when a player comes to the sidelines bloody and covered with snot? Is she going to pat him on the head?' He seemed to think she was in the lingerie league.

That school would not have taken this step unless she had great credentials. They know this will be watched everywhere. As for the players having trouble with her, I think she will channel their Mamas and Daddys and that won't be a problem.

I also have 2 words for Mr. Bullock: Pat Summit. If she happened to have expertise in football and had taken on a head coaching job in that sport, does he think she would have trouble? C.Vivian Stringer also comes to mind. I would not want to cross either one of them no matter what sport they were coaching.
