Uh oh. Time to resign Mr. Garn. Cheryl Maher says Kevin Garn lied about hot tub contact

SALT LAKE CITY — Cheryl Maher said Friday that Utah House Majority Leader Kevin Garn is lying about having no physical contact with her when they went hot-tubbing in the nude when she was 15 years old.

She also says they had a long-term relationship at that time and contends that he had affairs with others.

Also, Garn may have violated election laws by not disclosing on federal forms that he paid Maher $150,000 in 2002 — the year he ran for Congress — to keep quiet.

"He is not being completely honest," Maher told the Deseret News by telephone from her home in New Hampshire.

Garn confessed to the Legislature on Thursday that the nude hot-tubbing took place in 1985, when Maher was 15 and Garn was 28 and married. But Garn said there was no touching or intercourse involved.

Maher declined to be specific about what happened, but said Garn "likes massage." She said she does not want to talk about specifics because she wants the focus not on Garn's actions but on "the devastation of my life because of sexual abuse that happens to so many." She hopes that by talking, "others will come forward, too."

15 yr old girls may "flirt" with a 28 yr old guy (especially if he's young-looking), BUT it's up to the 28 yr old to act like an adult and get the hell OUT of any possibility of even the appearance of impropriety..

8. The interesting part of this $150,000 payoff

is that it was brokered by Maher's LDS BISHOP. Lawyers were also involved, she signed a nondisclosure agreement. My guess is that she brought it up again because she'd run out of money.

I checked his picture -- a cherub-cheeked Mormon. Shortish man. The wronged woman and he are a rather unlovely pair, ethically. I can't believe that playing around naked in a hot tub 25 years ago destroyed Maher's life to the tune of $150,000, and I can't believe that it was only Garn's "one unfortunate mistake."

Polanski was accused of his acts contemporaneously with their occurrence and a grand jury returned an indictment against him charging him with rape by use of drugs, perversion, sodomy, lewd and lascivious act upon a child under fourteen (the victim was 13), and furnishing a controlled substance to a minor. Polanski pled guilty to a charge of unawful intercourse with a minor (statutory rape).

At some point, evidence may emerge that Garn committed some or all of the same acts with Maher (it certainly wouldn't be a surprise). But for the moment, the difference is between was has been alleged and admitted.
