Did Toyota Prius Driver Fake Unintended Acceleration?Driver's Credibility Called Into Question

Posted: Mar, 12 2010

Did the driver of a runaway Toyota Prius in San Diego tell the truth when he said his accelerator pedal stuck earlier this week? New evidence is calling the driver's credibility into question, although the real answer will not be entirely clear until Toyota and the NHTSA announce the results of their investigation. Details about the driver, James Sikes, leave many wondering if he had ulterior motives for his claims.

USA Today and Jalopnik.com are directly asking the question as to whether or not he faked the incident, citing previous issues with debt and repeated insurance claims as reason for their doubts.

Imagine the entire MSM looking into every nook and cranny of your past because some corporation sold you a lemon. Talking to you employer, neighbors and creditors.

Well if that little fact alone isn't enough to make someone not buy a Toyota I don't know what is?

Fun, huh?

6. Toyota has a long despicable history of covering up problems and blaming customers
Toyota should be the one on trial and not their victims until fraud is found. My question is why Toyota won't open up their black boxes to the public like American and European manufacturers do?

15. Toyota as a company has had ethics problems since the beginning
SACRAMENTO -- The California Environmental Protection Agency’s Air Resources Board (ARB) announced today that Toyota has agreed to a $7.9 million settlement stemming from a 1998 recall order for potential defects in evaporative emission system monitors.
ARB’s Executive Officer Michael Kenny said, “We are pleased that we have reached an agreement in this case. We believe that this settlement will not only benefit the owners of the vehicles but all Californians.”

Through discussions finalized February 20, 2002, Toyota agreed to fund a package valued at $7.9 million. A $1.2 million contribution will go to the California Air Pollution Control Fund (APCF). The state uses this fund to educate the public and provide programs to minimize the output of smog-forming emissions from various sources. And, $4.3 million will go toward supplemental environmental projects to be agreed upon jointly between ARB and Toyota.

Soooo, you're saying NO ONE in this country has sought to make a living or get themselves out of a financial hole by scamming insurance companies?

10. Do you support fraud?
A review of the audio, video and the driver's own statements show he was either committing fraud -- most probable -- or was very incompetent and shouldn't have a drivers license.

13. There seems to have been a dramatic increase in the number of incidents
since the issue was a major public issue. I have seen many people mistake the gas for the brake, well before Toyota's problems. I have also witnessed numerous cases of insurance fraud. So I don't think it's unreasonable to do a thorough investigation.

16. Fake an incident after filing for bankruptcy and falling behind on your car payments?
Yeah, his background should be investigated. Especially when people who know him start calling in to report that he has a history of insurance fraud.

If you think he's telling the truth, do this. Go out to your car, take it up to 80 on the highway, with moderate to light traffic. Now, reach down and try to grab the accelerator with your hand. Either hand, I'm not picky. Tell you what, I'll even let you set in your driveway and try to grab it while still keeping your head above the dashboard and your hand on the steering wheel. Remember, don't turn the wheel, even a little bit.
