U.S. Supreme Court: Will liberal Kagan find a home in high court?
WASHINGTON, March 14 (UPI) -- As the drama builds to Justice John Paul Stevens' inevitable retirement from the U.S. Supreme Court, one name keeps popping up as a probable successor -- Elena Kagan, solicitor general of the United States.

Is Stevens really ready to retire? Many observers think so. He turns 90 next month, and only one other justice in history served to that age. Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes turned 90 in 1932 and retired shortly thereafter.

Stevens appears to be in top shape, but he also spends every possible minute away from Washington at his Florida home. He has understaffed himself with clerks this term, something justices do when they're on their way out.

So if Stevens is ready to retire, say when the term ends in late June, is Kagan his inevitable successor?

Maybe, shading to probably. But nothing's certain.

1. Frankly I hope so
If Obama is headed towards being a 1 termer (or even if we just lose seats in the Senate and house in 2010), we need to get as many of the older libs replaced on the Court with younger ones as possible. It would be nice to do this before the fall elections, too, but I am not holding my breath.

4. How old is Kagan? Stevens was born in 1920; Ginsberg in '33; and Breyer in '38

6. I don't see Liu getting on the Supreme Court this term
He just got the appeals court, which is a good thing, but I don't think he's going to get another promotion that soon.

Ideally, what I would like to see there would be for him to be there a few years, and then when a Repuke judge retires from the Supreme Court (i.e. Scalia or Thomas - or Opie Roberts if he quits for health reasons) then you bring in the Asian guy in his early 40's and really watch right wing heads explode :nuke:
