US Resident Treated Successfully in India after US doctors Denied Treatment

Mohammad Walji, the 74-year-old US citizen, who was denied a treatment for his Parkinson’s disease in US, finally received it at Jaslok Hospital and Research Centre, a Mumbai-based hospital.

The hospital proclaimed the success of the treatment on Tuesday.

“Despite taking large doses of medicine he could independently function for only a few hours in the day and rest of the period was spent in bed or in an incapacitated manner”, Dr. Paresh Doshi of Jaslok.

“Surgical treatment was the only option for a better quality of life, although his age was of concern”, he added.

The patient was totally dependent on his wife prior to the treatment, as he suffered from severe motor fluctuations.

More than 6 doctors had been consulted for his treatment in U. S., and all of them denied taking up the task, in view of his age.

8. Worse, that was in 2002 IIRC. We've stood still or become worse while the
rest of the world continued to move forward.

Of course now, we don't even know in which direction forward lies.

4. Deep brain stimulation (implantation of electrodes into the brain)
is done frequently, even in patients this man's age, but it is a risky operation. There may be things about this particular patient's medical history that's not in the story and which caused reluctance on the part of so many doctors.

5. so WHO financed his trip?
Congrats on getting better, but more DETAILS would make this seem less like a politically motivated story.

6. A couple more links with more info:

http://www.topnews.in/india-saves-old-patient-2255993
(note something they claim in that link: He was cured in Jaslok Hospital, Mumbai. It was reported that the man was deprived of medical surgery in the US, as the law does not allow operation of people over the age of 65. )
