The silence re Juanita Goggins' death is deafening
and frightening.

This pioneer's story is in the UK Guardian.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/mar/12/juanita-goggins-frozen-death-southcarolina
<snip>
So the residents of her South Carolina community were saddened, if not entirely shocked, to hear that the 75-year-old woman had frozen to death in her own home and that her body went undiscovered for nearly a fortnight.

But in the days before her funeral today, they were surprised to learn that at one time Goggins had been a trailblazing politician and civil rights activist who shook up South Carolina's exclusive politics as the first black woman elected to the southern state's legislature.

That same legislature last year honoured Goggins, who was also the first black woman to serve on the government's civil rights commission and who was twice invited to the White House by President Jimmy Carter, by naming a highway after her. But that didn't catch the eye of the people who lived around her. It was Goggins's neighbour of 16 years, Erskine Hunter, who dropped off the groceries and left before she answered the door.

He also tended her lawn but was invited in only once, to fix a water heater. He knew nothing of her past. "I miss her," he told the Associated Press. "I don't know why I didn't go over there and hammer on the door."

9. I caught it here, but it couldn't compete with the nonsense.
Besides, the all new and improved, Super Duper New Democratic Party® doesn't know or care about such ancient history.

Hell, all she did was go to DC and didn't even get herself rich in the process, she must not have been very good at it.
:sarcasm:

13. It was, but only lightly.
Judging by the tone of the articles that have covered it, I suspect that most of the media simply viewed it as more of a regional story than a national one. Most of the country simply has no clue who she was, and as she isn't a "known name", she isn't going to get major headlines.

4. Sad end for a fighter, a patriot.

I hope she was connected enough with the outside world to have seen the Obama's in the Whitehouse.

6. Get your feudalism on.
Today's US Senate: 97 Caucasians(3 of which are Hispanic), 1 Black American(on a technicality), 2 Asians.

Almost a mirror of society. :sarcasm:

66% millionaires.

Another true reflection.

Average net worth: $14M

I feel represented.

11. Those stats are pathetic, aren't they?
The sad thing is the "poorest" Senators have been those that have made way more they we ever will...in the $100,000 range.

Edited on Mon Mar-15-10 12:42 PM by aikoaiko

When I went to look for this thread it had already dropped to the 3rd page and I wanted to bump it to the top so that more people saw it.

Other boards use the convention more.

14. Yes it is a very tragic story
but the reality is that she was poor and black, hence nobody cares.

That is the problem, people not giving a crap about poor people and especially poor people of color.
