Family Of Luger Killed At Olympics Will Receive Insurance Money From Games
Edited on Mon Mar-15-10 11:32 AM by Spazito
The family of a Georgian luger who died at the 2010 Winter Olympics will receive insurance money from the Vancouver organizing committee.

The committee had insurance policies for the 5,000 athletes and officials who were at the Games, as well as other members of the Olympic family.

The committee had the insurance policies to fulfil a requirement that they provide free health care for Olympic family members.

They decided to add coverage for accidental death or dismemberment to the policies, which also covered the return of Kumaritashvili's remains to Georgia.

I am very glad VANOC decided to go beyond what was required by the IOC re insurance and added coverage for accidental death or dismemberment. The article states "the family is in urgent need of financial support." so I hope this helps from that perspective.

It is interesting, as a side note, that the IOC has a requirement that the host country/city provide free healthcare for Olympic family members. I was not aware of that.
