With regard to the healthcare reform being a "government takeover" I just don't get it. What in the fuck is wrong with people? I just don't understand.
To the right-wingers, anyone in government or the military "deserves" healthcare because of what they do. No one else does. I've had people throw at me "If you want healthcare, get a job, asshole!!" I just shake my head at them. I have had private insurance for most of my life, only time I didn't was when I was married and my ex-wife's insurance was better than mine, which was a private policy.
My dad was denied coverage by United Healthcare because of one of these bullshit pre-existing conditions. But they said they'd insure him if he paid more in premiums. He can't help his condition, as it runs in his family.
A very right-wing friend sent me an email praising the fact that Obama refuses to give up his healthcare if "reform" passes. Why would he? He's got the same coverage as any government employee, so why would he want to change it? I schooled her a bit and EXPLAINED healthcare given to federal employees is socialized.
Another thing is this... my ex-wife served in the Army. Sadly, she had a finger severed while on routine duty at Ft. Campbell. Emergency surgery to amputate the finger. Doctor and physical therapy visits. Second surgery that was kinda elective.... metacarpal reduction. It cost her $34 due to the meals she got while at Ft. Knox. Republicans say she deserved the best care due to her being in the Army and that ordinary people aren't worthy of it. As they still say, get a job if you want healthcare. Sigh...
Am I just missing something?

8. What Deep 13 said, and welcome to DU. |

It is the height of hypocrisy that many of us aren't 'eligible' for the very same health care and insurance that our elected officials in D.C. are. :grr:

2. You're not missing anything. And welcome to DU. |

This is far from a government takeover, as private companies will benefit.
Still, I back it (incoming!!!). Get it done. Then fix it. If this fails, we will never again see any health care reform in our lifetimes. Doing nothing is not an option.
Sorry to hear about your dad.

3. My take: It's all racism. All of it. The denigrating of our public schools, the healthcare debate, |
|
the unemployment insurance debate. All of it.

9. I think you may have a point there |
|
There are some who think that minorities are lazy, greedy and not deserving of the benefits of living in the wealthiest country in the Universe.
For them, "the public" means a bunch of leaches who do nothing but "take from the taxpayer".
If only they'd take their heads out of their asses once in a while, they'd realize that THEY THEMSELVES are "the public".

14. Not racism, but classism |
|
It seems like racism because most of our poor are minorities. "The public" also includes poor white people, who they look down on just as much (see: "white trash".) I have run across a few of them who even call the elderly "lazy" for collecting Social Security instead of working. These people just can't stand the idea of people getting something for nothing. It doesn't matter what color the people are.

The idea of people "getting something for nothing" ignores the benefit they have to society.
Seniors paid their dues. Most were born during the Great Depression and paid into SS and pension funds their whole lives.
Minorities paid because they were denied a living wage throughout their lives and were actively prevented from advancing.
These conservatives screaming "reparations are unfair" deny the billions or even trillions of dollars that minorities couldn't access during their lives.
It's a racket, as one wise man once said.

4. If the Bill passes as is... |
|
...people will have the opportunity to purchase the same plans that the Federal Govt. has access to. If they can't afford it, there will be subsidies in the form of tax cuts. This is not socialized or government-run healthcare. Just a large pool of people who can negotiate better rates than individuals can from private insurance companies, who won't be able to refuse access due to pre-existing conditions, etc.

10. Yep... collective bargaining... |
|
Just like unions and big business!
I've paid more for my health care in the past five years for myself than I did the preceding 25 for my family of five while on a union collective bargaining plan. This is NO exaggeration. I pay over $150 a month, with a $15 copay (and that isn't bad at all... most people I know pay three or four times that amount) currently for myself. I (or my ex, actually) paid $40 a month with $5 copays for the whole family.
