4. We're 39!
However, this burg has the distinction of having more professional writers per capita than any other metropolitan area. Read that in the local paper many moons ago.

I do know there are many indie bookstores here plus chains and that they're all full when I go.

6. 29, but I have a problem with their methodology.
Anyone who has been to Washington DC can see that there is no way in hell the typical DC resident is more literate than the typical New Yorker. I mean, not in a regional rivalry way, but somehow, I think this study fails to measure literacy accurately.

Aurora is a suburb of 10th place Denver. Aurora is tied for 70th.

11. We're number 1
Most of the people we know have advanced degrees, for instance.

The long, dark winters also ensure lots of bookstore traffic.

17. And yet while their data collection methodology appears sound.....
...based upon the "quality" of the poster's comments that I often read in the Tennessean's articles, I'd never come to the conclusion that we'd have such a high ranking.

since I never post in the Tennessean but I agree about some of the goofballs that feel compelled to post their opinions in the paper.

21. #3 - Minneapolis
Of course this is also the state that continues to elect Michelle Bachmann and is looking at drastically reducing the size of the state legislature by reducing the number of reps by up to 1/3, so honestly we should be dropping like a rock pretty soon.
