Kucinich to announce his vote on health care Wednesday morning
By Mark Naymik, The Plain Dealer
March 16, 2010, 6:20PM
With Stephen Koff

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Cleveland Congressman Dennis Kucinich, a politician with a well-documented flare for the dramatic, will hold a press conference tomorrow to announce how he plans to vote on the controversial health-care bill before Congress.

The bill has no Republican backers so President Barack Obama and Democratic House leaders have been leaning on several dozen Democratic lawmakers, including Kucinich, who either have qualms about the legislation or plan to vote no.

At this point, it's not entirely clear whether there will be a vote or if House Speaker Nancy Pelosi will use a procedural tactic to get around it and still get the package passed. But if votes are in fact needed, Kucinich's could matter.

Last weekend, Kucinich was a firm "no," saying the health-insurance package seemed to favor insurance companies over ordinary Americans. Kucinich wants single-payer, universal coverage. He has pushed for it for years.

But it's safe to say he's not going to win that one this week. And yesterday, after the Cleveland Democrat joined Obama on Air Force One as the president flew to Northeast Ohio to continue lobbying for passage, Kucinich's position may have softened. Or may not have. His office says he has made no statements, but political junkies are making bets as if this is the Final Four.

He'll end the speculation at 10 a.m. tomorrow at a news conference in the Capitol, his office says.

10. It's nice that a member of Congress has time to talk to us
instead of just his stock broker and his big donors.

We just don't know how to handle it any more. lol

18. Bingo. Why didn't Obama pressure those two and others like them?

Instead the powder was kept dry until it was time to push through a weak, watered down corporate gift that masks skyrocketing costs with bloated subsidies.

7. How dare a member of Congress talk to the public.
Edited on Tue Mar-16-10 07:36 PM by EFerrari
Why can't he just read the WH talking points and vote already?

13. Wouldn't that be interesting. I wonder what the reaction will
be. Nothing has changed. If Kucinich changes his mind, all of the flamewars here over the past couple of weeks will have been for naught, I think.

Personally, I hope he comes to his senses and votes for the bill. I'll thank him for that.

15. As I've said here before, Dennis is all about the face-time on TeeVee. His true "constituency" is
the talking heads and pundits on the cable shows - he plays to their weakness for conflict, division, and controversy within the context of a political party.

Thus, the sham grandstanding here. It's the Congressman from Ohio's shtick.

He's saved thousands of jobs in his district, damn near single-handedly, without a camera anywhere near.
