What if Dennis resigns from office tomorrow? |
|
...in order to make a principled stand against a health care bill without a public option? I'm eager to hear what he has to say at his press conference tomorrow.

9. That's usually when an appointed official is asked to go along with or do something they feel |
|
compromises their principles. If the congressman feels he can't support the bill he can just vote against it. Resigning doesn't do anything to further his stand.

The Democratic Party does not represent the people anymore.
And, bonus, he would still win handily.

11. We would still need 216 |
|
There would be 430 members in the House, so the magic number would not move.
Although if he wants to resign and take Artur Davis with him, that would be fine. Then we'd need 215.

12. Then this country is truly, irreversibly fucked. |
|
Not because Dennis himself is the single most important person on the planet, but because following so quickly after the Massa thing, and the still questionable death of Murtha, it would certainly give the appearance of "somebody" going out of their way to purge the party by whatever means necessary.
Not saying whether or not I would agree with such a conclusion, but the question would be there.
Furthermore, Dennis ain't getting run off by anybody.

19. And Dorgan is leaving also. All the good Democrats seem to |
|
be going.
Dorgan, like Kucinich, added an amendment to try to help this bill do something for the corporations. He was shocked to find that it was the WH that killed his amendment. He said that is not the reason he is leaving. Maybe not, but if a good Democrat like him felt he could accomplish something by staying, I think he would.
I doubt Kucinich will resign as he is a fighter and appears to still believe that things can get better. But I wouldn't blame him if he did.

17. It seems unlikely, but as far as health care reform goes..... |
|
wouldn't that be as good as a yes vote?
I think that would lower the number of "yeas" needed by 1 (unless my math is off, which it may be).
I hope he is going to rail against the bill and then say he will vote for it anyways because doing nothing would be even worse.
With any luck he is trying to look like the one key vote needed to put this over the top. He can have the spotlight as far as I am concerned as long as he votes for the bill.
That or he is going to buy everyone a beer for St. Patrick's Day.
