Casualties in Iraq

Thursday’s Star tells us of the administration’s boast that there has been “a dramatic drop in sectarian violence” since the troop surge (4/26, A-14). But the figures don’t include those killed by car bombs and suicide bombers. That must be a great comfort to the families of those victims. If the Japanese didn’t count the atomic bomb casualties, would they have won World War II?

In a staggering (even for this president) bit of gibberish, President Bush explained: “If the standard of success is no car bombings or suicide bombings, we have just handed those who commit suicide bombings a huge victory.” Huh?

Wait a minute! What a great idea! From now on Royals’ opponents’ home runs will not count — only runs scored on ground balls. And passing touchdowns by the Chiefs’ opponents won’t count, only scores made by running. Hello, World Series! Hello Super Bowl!

The man needs serious therapy.
